The aim of this study was to evaluate the vitality and viability of the probiotic yeast Saccharomyces boulardii after freezing/thawing and the physiological preconditioning effect on these properties. The results indicate that the specific growth rate (0.3/h?1) and biomass (2-3 × 108 cells/ml) of S. boulardii obtained in flasks shaken at 28 °C and at 37 °C were similar. Batch cultures of the yeast in bioreactors using glucose or sugar-cane molasses as carbon sources, reached yields of 0.28 g biomass/g sugar consumed, after 10 h incubation at 28 °C; the same results were obtained in fed batch fermentations. On the other hand, in batch cultures, the vitality of cells recovered during the exponential growth phase was greater than the vitality of cells from the stationary phase of growth. Vitality of cells from fed-batch fermentations was similar to that of stationary growing cells from batch fermentations. Survival to freezing at –20 °C and subsequent thawing of cells from batch cultures was 0.31% for cells in exponential phase of growth and 11.5% for cells in stationary phase. Pre-treatment of this yeast in media with water activity (aw) 0.98 increased the survival to freezing of S. boulardii cells stored at –20 °C for 2 months by 10 fold. Exposure of the yeast to media of reduced aw and/or freezing/thawing process negatively affected cell vitality. It was concluded that stress conditions studied herein decrease vitality of S. boulardii. Besides, the yeast strain studied presented good tolerance to bile salts even at low pH values.  相似文献

The aetiology of behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) is defined by a diversity of factors, and recent studies suggest that premorbid personality could be a risk factor for BPSD. This study aimed to review studies on the relationship between premorbid personality and BPSD.Studies were identified using PsycInfo, MedLine, and PubMed. The searches combined terms for premorbid personality, dementia and BPSD. Ten studies have been included in this review.Eight out of ten studies show a relationship between premorbid personality and BPSD. Neuroticism is associated with behavioural disturbances and anxiety. Extraversion is associated with wandering. Low agreeableness is associated with affective disturbance and aggression-related behaviours and high agreeableness is associated with wandering. The studies found no congruent results for openness and conscientiousness. In conclusion, premorbid personality may increase the risk of developing BPSD during the course of the disease. Even so, the relationship between personality and BPSD is complex due to multifactorial aetiology.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to determine whether depression precedes Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) as a risk factor or as a predictor in Alzheimer's disease (AD). A systematic review of observational studies (cross-sectional and cohort or follow-up) was carried out using the PRISMA search algorithm, for clinical markers in MCI and AD, in the Science Direct, Springer, Scopus and Proquest databases. The study eligibility criteria included inclusion criteria: of types of documents, articles of primary studies, type of source scientific journals, published in the English language, from January 2010 to April 2020, in patients with MCI and AD and in the group of age included in people with a minimum age range of 45 years. Exclusion criteria were: publications older than 10 years because the aim of the article was to explore recent studies, secondary research studies, type of report document, languages other than English. 3385 articles were identified, of which 30 articles were finally selected. It was found that there is an association between depression and AD, but properly as a risk factor but not, as a predictor or clinical marker of the development of AD. The degree of association is greater when they present depressive symptoms and simultaneously report subjective memory complaints or the presence of MCI.  相似文献

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is an important global health problem, involving to 10% of the Spanish population, promoting high morbidity and mortality for the patient and an elevate consumption of the total health resources for the National Health System. This is a summary of an executive consensus document of ten scientific societies involved in the care of the renal patient, that actualizes the consensus document published in 2007. The central extended document can be consulted in the web page of each society. The aspects included in the document are: Concept, epidemiology and risk factors for CKD. Diagnostic criteria, evaluation and stages of CKD, albuminuria and glomerular filtration rate estimation. Progression factors for renal damage. Patient remission criteria. Follow-up and objectives of each speciality control. Nephrotoxicity prevention. Cardio-vascular damage detection. Diet, life-style and treatment attitudes: hypertension, dyslipidaemia, hyperglycemia, smoking, obesity, hyperuricemia, anemia, mineral and bone disorders. Multidisciplinary management for Primary Care, other specialities and Nephrology. Integrated management of CKD patient in haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and renal transplant patients. Management of the uremic patient in palliative care. We hope that this document may be of help for the multidisciplinary management of CKD patients by summarizing the most updated recommendations.  相似文献

Background and objectivesThe prevalence of anaemia is an important health indicator, although there is little rigorous information gathered on the elderly population, particularly in those over 80 years old. The same criteria that are used in the general population are often used to define anaemia in the elderly. The epidemiological data collected by the WHO in 1968 (that have been used to generalise this criteria), did not include the population over 65 years-old.Two objectives are established, which includes a critical review of the available evidence on whether the criteria used to define anaemia in the adult population can be extrapolated to the elderly, and a review of publications on the prevalence of anaemia in the elderly over 80 years-old.Material and methodsA systematic bibliographic search was performed on the established objectives.ResultsAlthough the WHO criteria, based on data from 1968, are widely used, other possible cut-off points have been proposed for elderly people. A total of 20 studies were found that were conducted in North America and Europe, with only 70,000 patients, and different age criteria. The prevalence of anaemia ranges between 3% and 63%, depending on the diagnostic criteria, age, and whether they were institutionalised or not.ConclusionsAnaemia is a very prevalent disease in elderly patients. The collection of large databases is necessary to determine more adequate diagnostic criteria.  相似文献

The bryophyte flora and vegetation have been studied in aquatic and wet environments of Valencia County (eastern Spain). A catalogue of 74 taxa is given, 3 species are new for eastern Spain and 6 for provinces of Valencia County (Valencia = 4, Castellón = 2). Aquatic communities have been studied according to the Braun-Blanquet (1952) method. Nine associations belonging to the classes Adiantetea, Montio-Cardaminetea and Platyhypnidio-Fontinalietea have been recognized. One association has been described as new, Fontinaletum hypnoidis ass. nova, which always grows submerged in calcareous, unpolluted and flowing water. Ecological and syntaxonomical data on problematical communities in the Mediterranean region (EucladioAdiantetum, Eucladietum and Eucladio-Didymodonetum) are given, as well as information on the dynamics of the communities.  相似文献

Background and objectiveDuring the COVID-19 pandemic, a strict population confinement was decreed in Spain. In a situation of health crisis and health system saturation, knowledge of pathologies whose treatment cannot be delayed is of great importance for the correct management of resources and processes. The objective was to determine the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic and the strict population confinement on hip fracture incidence in Spain.Material and methodSystematic review following the PRISMA guidelines. Search in Pubmed and Chocrane Library on 11/11/2022: hip fracture and COVID-19 and Spain.ResultsSix studies met the inclusion criteria, 50% showed a decrease in the hip fractures incidence during strict population confinement (all in Comunidad de Madrid hospitals), and in the other 50% there were no differences (all in other region hospitals). It was constant that hip fractures, either did not decrease, or decreased much less than the rest of fractures during the period of strict population confinement, increasing their relative number with respect to the total admissions in orthopedic surgery and traumatology.ConclusionsThe behavior of the hip fractures number during the strict population confinement decreed by the COVID-19 pandemic has not been symmetrical in all regions. To design and implement contingency plans in the event of a pandemic situation, these data must be taken into account in order to properly plan material and human resources.  相似文献

Acute pancreatitis is a disease that, by definition, generates an increase in metabolism. This metabolic reaction, together with the anorexia produced by the disease, clearly increases morbidity and mortality secondary to malnutrition.Malnutrition affects almost 70% of patients with cirrhosis, with a consequent increase in complications. The present review aims to evaluate the utility of the use of total parenteral nutrition (TPN) and/or enteral nutrition (EN) in patients with acute pancreatitis and in those with stable chronic liver disease. In patients with acute pancreatitis, the administration of enteral nutrition seems to confer advantages over parenteral nutrition in clinical variables (infections, surgical interventions, and mean length of hospital stay) (A-B); nevertheless, further studies stratifying patients according to the severity of pancreatitis and probably its etiology should be designed. Glutamine supplementation can be effective in reducing length of hospital stay and duration of nutritional support (B).In patients with stable chronic liver disease, there are no studies that demonstrate the superiority of EN over PN, or vice versa, in relevant clinical variables (mortality, length of hospital stay, etc.). There is only one study that has demonstrated that EN is superior to oral intake in reducing mortality (B).Improved study designs and the need to perform studies according to the type and severity of liver disease should be a research priority.  相似文献

White rot fungi (Ascomycota and Basidiomycota) were collected on fallen trunks with different decay stages, in a subandean forest (La Montaña del Ocaso nature reserve), and it was evaluated their ligninolitic activity. They were cultured on malt extract agar. Then it was performed semiquantitative tests for laccase and cellobiose dehydrogenase (CDH) activity using ABTS and DCPIP as enzymatic inducers. Based on the results of these tests, the fungi with higher activities from trunks with different decay stages were selected: Cookeina sulcipes (for stage 1), a fungus from the family Corticiaceae (for stage 2), Xylaria polymorpha (for stage 3) and Earliella sp. (for stage 4). A fermentation was performed at 28 °C, during 11 days, in a rotatory shaker at 150 rpm. Biomass, glucose, proteins and enzyme activities measurements were performed daily. The fungi that were in the trunks with decay states from 1 to 3, showed higher laccase activity as the state of decay increased. A higher DCH activity was also associated with a higher. Also, there was a positive relationship between both enzymes' activities. Erliella was the fungus which presented the highest biomass production (1140,19 g/l), laccase activity (157 UL?1) and CDH activity (43,50 UL?1). This work is the first report of laccase and CDH activity for Cookeina sulcipes and Earliella sp. Moreover, it gives basis for the use of these native fungi in biotechnological applications and the acknowledgment of their function in the wood decay process in native forest.  相似文献

Background and objectivesIt has been reported that the risk of fracture is increased in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). The aim of this study was to investigate the possible relationship between DM and hip fracture, as well as any associated risk factors, by means of a systemic review of the literature.MethodsPubMed and SCOPUS databases were used to search for relevant studies published from January 2001 to August 2018. Retrospective and prospective cohort studies were selected in which the estimated risk of hip fracture was demonstrated by comparing groups of diabetic patients with non-diabetics. A search was also made for risk factors independent from the association between DM and hip fracture.ResultsA total of 27 articles that fulfilled the inclusion criteria were included. A clear association was observed in diabetic patients (women and men) compared to non-diabetics patients. Among the risk factors, the most important ones were the fact that diabetes was type 1, probably associated with greater risk to a longer duration of DM, and being a female.ConclusionsThere is an increased risk of hip fracture in patients diagnosed with DM. This association is more significant in diabetes type 1 and women.  相似文献
