In this study, we present a diagnosis concerning the state of healthiness of the coast of the city of El Jadida by: characterisation of the various collectors rejected in sea without any preliminary treatment, measure of the physicochemical parameters of seawater from sampling stations, evaluation of the concentration of certain heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Zn, Fe and Mn) in four species of algae, which shows that metal contents vary according to the species and the sampling stations, measure of the metal content in mussels, which varies according to the site. A comparative study with the data of the literature shows that algae and mussels generally present values that are weaker than those coming from other geographical areas.  相似文献

Lessonia trabeculata is the most important brown seaweed in northern Chilean subtidal environments. It usually grows in areas with high to moderately high water movement, and only occasionally in sheltered habitats. These different hydrodynamic environments produce morphologically and physiologically distinct plants. The purpose of this study was to determine probable differences in reproductive features between two L. trabeculata populations exposed to different water movement intensities. The zoospore production, settlement, germination, gametophyte fertility and survival were studied.Zoospore release and spore attachment capacity were higher from blades from El Francés Beach, the locality with higher water movement energy. Germination at 24 hours was higher in the germlings from El Francés Beach than those from La Herradura Bay. However, after 4 days of culture germination rates were similar. Average survival rates of gametophytes were similar for both populations. After 20 days culturing gametophytes from El Francés Beach fertilization was observed, while in samples from La Herradura Bay the sporophytes were seen at 27d.The results suggest a higher reproductive vitality in plants of Lessonia trabeculata living in an environment with an active water movement, than plants growing in a sheltered environment.  相似文献

In a recent article, Hachich et al. (2015, Journal of Biogeography, 42 , 1871–1882) studied the large‐scale biogeographical patterns of the species–area, species–island age and species–isolation relationships associated with marine shallow‐water groups (reef fish, gastropods and seaweeds) from 11 Atlantic archipelagos. We here express our concerns regarding the data accuracy used to compute the different models that tested the null hypothesis of species richness being independent of the selected variables. In our commentary, we focus mainly on the use of out‐of‐date checklists of gastropod and seaweed species from different archipelagos, but we also point out inaccuracies in some island age estimates and explain our disagreement with the use of the 200 m depth limit for the shallow‐water gastropods and seaweeds.  相似文献

Seaweed biofilters have proven their usefulness in the treatment of fishpond effluents. However, their performance poses a dilemma: TAN (Total Ammonia N) uptake rate – and with it seaweed yield and protein content – is inversely proportional to TAN uptake efficiency. The ideal for a seaweed biofilter performance would be a high uptake rate together with high uptake efficiency. The novel three-stage seaweed biofilter design described here has solved this dilemma. The design used the finding that the performance of seaweed ponds depended on the flux of TAN through them, and that therefore effluents with reduced TAN concentration could provide the seaweed with a high TAN flux if the water flow increased proportionally. Effluents from a seabream fishpond were passed through a series of three successively smaller (25, 12.5 and 6.25 m2, respectively) air-agitated Ulva lactuca ponds. The diminished inflow TAN concentrations to the second and third ponds of the biofilter system were compensated for by the increased water exchange rates, inversely proportional to their sizes. The biofilter performance was evaluated under several TAN loads. TAN was efficiently removed (85–90%), at a high areal rate (up to 2.9 g N m-2 d-1) while producing high protein U. lactuca (up to 44% dw) in all three stages, although with mediocre yields (up to 189 g fresh m-2 d-1). Performance of each seaweed biofilter pond correlated not with TAN concentration, but with areal TAN loads. The novel three-stage design provides significant functional and economic improvements in seaweed biofiltration of intensive fishpond water.  相似文献

Animal model studies suggest that diets containing Laminaria angustata, a brown seaweed commonly eaten in Japan, inhibit breast carcinogenesis. In order to identify the compound(s) in the seaweed responsible for tumor-inhibiting activity, we used Ames/mammalian microsome assay system to determine the antimutagenic (or anticarcinogenic) effect of various solvents and water extracts of Laminaria angustata. The antimutagenic effects of acetone, ether, chloroform, chloroform + methanol, hot water and cold water extracts on the mutagenicity induced by 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA), a breast carcinogen, and 3,2'-dimethyl-4-aminobiphenyl (DMAB), a colon and breast carcinogen, was studied using the Salmonella typhimurium strains TA98 and TA100. All extracts were nonmutagenic in both bacterial tester strains. The addition of 10-100 mg solvent extracts of seaweed/plate greatly inhibited DMAB-induced mutagenicity in both tester strains (80-96% inhibition) and DMBA-induced mutagenicity in TA100 (about 82%), whereas hot and cold water extracts produced a moderate inhibition in a dose-related manner in both strains.  相似文献

Three field experiments were performed in Lake Lacawac, PA to determine the importance of potentially limiting nutrients relative to other factors (grazing, depth) in structuring shallow water algal periphyton communities. All three experiments measured periphyton growth (as chlorophyll-a, AFDM or biovolumes of the algal taxa) on artificial clay flower pot substrates which released specified nutrients to their outer surfaces.Control of standing crop by nutrient supply rate vs. grazing was examined in Expt. I. Substrates releasing excess N and P, together with one of 4 levels of C (as bicarbonate) were placed either inside or outside exclosures designed to reduce grazer densities. Chlorophyll-a rose from 1.1–25.6 µg.cm–2, and some dominant taxa (e.g., Oedogonium, Nostoc, Anacystis) were replaced by others (e.g., Scenedesmus, Cryptomonas) as bicarbonate supply increased. Reductions in invertebrate density did not significantly affect chlorophyll-a at any of the nutrient levels.Reasons for the species shift were further evaluated in Expt. II, using a minielectrode to measure the elevation of pH within the periphyton mat through photosynthetic utilization of bicarbonate. The pH adjacent to pots diffusing N, P and large quantities of bicarbonate, and supporting high chlorophyll-a densities of 32 µg cm–2, averaged 10.0 compared to 6.3 in the water column. Pots diffusing only N and P supported 0.7 µg chlorophyll-a cm–2 and elevated pH to 8.2. We suspect that bicarbonate addition favored efficient bicarbonate users (e.g., Scenedesmus), while inhibiting other taxa (e.g., Oedogonium) because of the attendant high pH.Expt. III was designed to test effects of depth (0.1 m vs. 0.5 m) and N (NH4 + vs. NO3 ) upon the growth response to bicarbonate observed in Expts. I and II. Similar standing crop and species composition were noted on pots at 0.1 m vs. 0.5 m. Enrichment with NH4 + vs. NO3 also appeared to have little effect upon the periphyton community.Shallow water periphyton communities in Lake Lacawac, when supplied with sufficient N and P, appear to show a distinctive response to increasing bicarbonate concentration and pH which is robust to moderate variation in grazer densities, distance from the water surface, and the form of N enrichment.  相似文献

The antiquity of the use of seaweed to feed domestic animals was investigated through carbon ( δ 13C) and oxygen ( δ 18O) isotope analysis of tooth enamel bioapatite. The analysis was performed on sheep and cattle teeth from two Neolithic sites in Orkney (Scotland). At the Knap of Howar, c . 3600 bc , carbon isotopes reflect grazing on terrestrial plants throughout the year for both sheep and cattle, with no contribution of seaweed to their diet. At the Holm of Papa Westray North (HPWN), c . 3000 bc , significant contribution of seaweed to the sheep diet during winter is indicated by bioapatite δ 13C values as high as −5.7‰, far outside of the range of values expected for the feeding on terrestrial C3 plants, and δ 18O values higher than expected during winter, possibly caused by ingestion of oceanic water with seaweed. Ingestion of seaweed by sheep at HPWN might have been necessitated by severe reduction of pastures during winter. Results suggest that sheep ingested fresh seaweed rather than dry fodder, perhaps directly on the shore as sheep do nowadays on North Ronaldsay. A significant difference between the two populations is the exclusive reliance on seaweed by the North Ronaldsay sheep, which have developed physiological adaptations to this diet. Contribution of seaweed to the sheep winter diet at HPWN might have been a first step towards this adaptation.  相似文献

Collections of 11 species of shallow water Polyplacophora from El Salvador were made in July 2002. Previously only five species had been documented in El Salvador: Chaetopleura lurida (Sowerby, 1832); Ischnochiton guatemalensis (Thiele, 1910); Ceratozona angusta (Thiele, 1909); Chiton stokesii (Broderip, 1832) and Acantochitona exquisita (Pilsbry, 1893). Of these, L. guatemalensis and A. exquisita were not collected in this census. Seven other species are reported here for El Salvador for the first time: Lepidochitona beanii (Carpenter, 1857); Ischnochiton dispar (Sowerby, 1832); Stenoplax limaciformis (Sowerby, 1832); Callistochiton expressus (Carpenter, 1865); Acanthochitona arragonites (Carpenter, 1867); A. ferreirai (Lyons, 1988) and A. hirudiniformis (Sowerby, 1832). The known geographic distribution of 1. dispar is extended to the north. An un-named species of Lepidochitona is briefly described.  相似文献

The vertical distribution of zooplankton rotifers in the open waters of Laguna El Tigre was investigated. Rotifers showed a relatively uniform distribution throughout the water column. This pattern of distribution was maintained during the year and did not show variations in relation to hydrologic phases of inundation and isolation of the lake. Diel vertical migration of rotifers from the limnetic and the littoral area was investigated too. In littoral area rotifers exhibited a reverse migration, whereas in the limnetic the movements were less conspicuous. Horizontal migration was observed too, and there were interactions between horizontal and vertical distribution. Predation and competition offer a possible explanation.  相似文献

The tropical red seaweed Halymenia durvillei Bory de Saint Vincent is a potential source of the high-value pigments, r-phycoerythrin (RPE) and r-phycocyanin (RPC). The unique properties of these pigments find many applications—from food to cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and biomedical research. This study aimed to improve the land-based culture technology of H. durvillei by determining the appropriate combination of light, water motion, and stocking density that would result in high growth performance and high RPE and RPC content. Combinations of two light levels (full light, 100% and reduced light, 67%), two water motion levels (low and moderate), and three stocking densities (50, 100, and 200 g) were studied using 64.5-L glass tanks with flow-through seawater and aeration systems at the outdoor land-based seaweed nursery in Bolinao, Pangasinan, Philippines. After 6 weeks of culture, growth performance (growth rate and productivity) of H. durvillei and phycobiliprotein content were best under a combination of full light (100%), moderate water motion, and 50-g stocking density. The generally low light regime during the experimental period, which coincided with the cold, dry season characterized by shorter days and overcast skies, may have influenced H. durvillei to maximize the use of available resources such as light and possible increased nutrient availability from water motion to promote growth and phycobiliprotein synthesis. Treatments with low stocking densities generally showed satisfactory growth and phycobiliprotein content. This study provides groundwork for future research into mechanisms by which these and other factors affect the growth and physiology of H. durvillei in culture.

The yield and quality of agar from Gelidium robustum from the main commercial harvest beds along the western coast of the Baja California Peninsula (Mexico) were evaluated within a latitudinal range of about 800 km (31°47′N to 27°05′N). Samples from six locations, Bahía Todos Santos, El Rosario, Isla de Cedros, Islas San Benito, Punta Eugenia, and Bahía Asunción, were analyzed. Bryozoan, protein, and agar content in the seaweed were estimated. The agar quality was determined by the content of 3,6-anhydrogalactose, sulfate, gel strength, and gelling and melting temperature. All the values of these variables were correlated and then with the satellite-derived data of the sea surface temperature (SST), net primary production (NPP), and photosynthetic active radiation (PAR) measured at each harvest bed during the summer months (June, July, and August) of 2000. In the northern and central region, the agar yield was 35% to 37% (Bahía Todos Santos, El Rosario, Isla de Cedros, and Islas San Benito), whereas lower yields were obtained from the southern beds (Punta Eugenia and Bahía Asunción). In contrast, the agar quality increased from the northern to the southern beds. A lower gel strength was obtained from Bahía Todos Santos and El Rosario (268 ± 16 and 205 ± 5 gcm−2) with a higher gel strength obtained from Isla de Cedros, Islas San Benito, and Bahía Asunción (384 to 444 ± 25 gcm−2). Yield was not correlated with the bryozoan content but was inversely correlated with the protein content in the seaweed. The sulfate content in the agar was inversely correlated with the gel strength and with the melting temperature. The 3,6-anhydrogalactose content showed slight variations among harvested beds. Analysis of satellite-derived data showed an equatorward increase of the SST, NPP, and PAR. The agar content correlated inversely with the equatorward increase of the NPP, whereas agar quality, i.e., gel strength, correlated positively with the NPP and PAR. No significant effects were observed on the yield and quality of agar with the latitudinal change of the SST.  相似文献

Enchytraeidae is a family of soil inhabiting small‐ to medium‐sized oligochaete worms using degradable plant material as a food source and primarily adapted to terrestrial or semi‐terrestrial environments. The molecular phylogeny based upon both mitochondrial and nuclear genes indicates early segregations of the two genera Enchytraeus and Lumbricillus leaving the remaining genera included in this study as a later segregated major monophyletic branch. Extant members of the two former genera dominate in decaying seaweed in the littoral zone along the sea although members of in particular the genus Enchytraeus have also invaded other habitats. Historically the littoral zone of the sea is undoubtedly the first terrestrial or semi‐terrestrial habitat where dead plant material accumulates to any greater extent and Enchytraeus and Lumbricillus may represent early successful attempts to exploit this resource. Inland soils probably had to await the emergence of land plants in order to provide a similar food resource and here the major branch of enchytraeid genera diversified into a high number of species in the numerous decomposer networks of this varied environment. A subdivision into the genera Enchytraeus and Lumbricillus on the one hand and a branch of mainly inland genera on the other is supported by differences in two somewhat neglected morphological features. Firstly, in Enchytraeus and Lumbricillus the testes are enclosed in a testis sac within which the male cells mature, by one possible exception a unique feature among Oligochaeta, The other enchytraeid genera studied and Oligochaeta in general lack this sac and the male cells mature directly in the cavity of the testicular segment. Secondly, species of Enchytraeus and Lumbricillus generally have a higher reproductive output than species of the inland terrestrial branch and this may represent an adaptation to the unpredictable littoral zone compared to the more stable nature of inland habitats. In the older literature the genus Mesenchytraeus is considered to have a basic position within the entire family but our molecular data do not support this expectation. In Enchytraeidae the nephridia are elaborate organs of a characteristic and constant shape covering species from different genera in a pattern following the molecular phylogeny. Other much used morphological features such as shape of setae, anteclitellar origin of the dorsal vessel and various modifications of the intestine have arisen more than once.  相似文献

Cytological, histopathological and sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel analyses were carried out on five populations of common Nile tilapia fish (Oreochromis niloticus) occurring in five sites – River Nile (reference site), Bahr Yusef canal, Ibrahimia canal, Irrigation drain and El Moheet drain of El Minia Province, Egypt – to evaluate the usability of Nile tilapia as a biomonitor for water heavy metal contaminants. Water surface samples were collected from the five sites, and lead (Pb) concentration was shown to surpass the limits defined by WHO. Ni and Cd levels were shown to be elevated in Ibrahimia canal samples. Moreover, the concentration of heavy metals in fish muscles collected from Bahr Yusef canal and El Moheet drain was the highest in comparison with those of the other water sites. Cytological examinations of blood smears showed not only a significant percentage of micronuclei in Irrigation drain population but also a significant percentage of binucleated cells in Ibrahimia canal and El Moheet drain populations. In addition, pathological alteration was observed in blood cells, especially in samples collected from Irrigation drain and El Moheet drain. Histopathological changes were strongly observed in the liver and the kidneys of El Moheet and Irrigation drain population. Moreover, total protein band pattern profiles showed extra bands in both Ibrahimia canal and Irrigation drain more than that recorded for the River Nile population. In conclusion, cyto-histopathological and total protein band pattern results confirmed that O. niloticus responds sensitively to the excess of heavy metals present in the water.  相似文献

Di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP), a toxic phthalate ester, is a ubiquitous contaminant due to its extensive use and persistence. No available treatment method can cost-effectively remove it from industrial wastewater. In a previous study, DEHP was effectively removed from aqueous solution by adsorption onto the biomass of selected seaweed, i.e., beached seaweed and Sargassum siliquastrum. Since biosorption cannot detoxify DEHP, the degradation (and detoxification) of desorbed DEHP from seaweed biomass by photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) was attempted. The first part of this study was to optimize the conditions for the degradation of desorbed DEHP in aqueous solution by PCO. Under optimized conditions, a total degradation of 20 mg/L of DEHP was achieved within 45 min. The degradation intermediates/products such as phthalic anhydride and 2-ethyhexanol were identified by GC-MS analysis. Total organic carbon analysis was also used to ensure the complete mineralization of DEHP. The Microtox® test was used to assess the toxicities of the parent and degraded compounds. In the second part of this study, DEHP was first removed and concentrated by adsorption onto seaweed biomass under the conditions optimized in the previous study. It was then desorbed from seaweed biomass and degraded by PCO. Results indicate that the treatment for DEHP by integrating biosorption and PCO is feasible.  相似文献

The growth, biofiltering efficiency and uptake rates of Ulva clathrata were studied in a series of outdoor tanks, receiving waste water directly from a shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) aquaculture pond, under constant aeration and two different water regimes: (1) continuous flow, with 1 volume exchange a day (VE day-1) and (2) static regime, with 1 VE after 4 days. Water temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), phosphate (PO4), chlorophyll-a (chl-a), total suspended solids (TSS), macroalgal biomass (fresh weight) and tissue nutrient assimilation were monitored over 12 days. Ulva clathrata was highly efficient in removing the main inorganic nutrients from effluent water, stripping 70–82% of the total ammonium nitrogen (TAN) and 50% PO4 within 15 h. Reductions in control tanks were much lower (Tukey HSD, P < 0.05). After 3 days, the mean uptake rates by the seaweed biomass under continuous flow were 3.09 mg DIN g DW day−1 (383 mg DIN m−2 day−1) and 0.13 mg PO4 g DW day−1 (99 mg PO4 m−2 day−1), being significantly higher than in the static regime (Tukey HSD, P < 0.05). The chl-a decreased in seaweed tanks, suggesting that U. clathrata inhibited phytoplankton growth. Correlations between the cumulative values of DIN removed from the water and total nitrogen assimilated into the seaweed biomass (r = 0.7 and 0.8, P < 0.05), suggest that nutrient removal by U. clathrata dominated over other processes such as phytoplankton and bacterial assimilation, ammonia volatilization and nutrient precipitation.  相似文献

Population samples from Morocco (El Jadida, south Atlantic coast) and La Alpujarra (Granada mountains, Spain), located on both shores of the western Mediterranean, were typed for 8 erythrocyte genetic markers: ACP1, ESD, PGD, AK1, GLO1, PGM1, SODA, and DIA. Genetic heterogeneity within western Mediterranean groups was investigated on the basis of allele frequencies of these 8 polymorphisms plus ABO and Rh (CDE). Only slight peculiarities for the ACP1, GLO1, and AK1 systems were observed in the 2 samples compared with other Mediterranean data. The new data are consistent with a main north to south genetic differentiation in the Mediterranean region. However, with regard to other European groups, the La Alpujarra population shows a particular affinity with North Africans that may be compatible with both an ancient common substratum and/or a special historical influence during the Muslim domination of the Iberian Peninsula.  相似文献

Three North African coastal lagoons were selected as primary sites for integrated ecological and hydrological monitoring and modelling as part of the MELMARINA Project (see Flower & Thompson, 2009). The three sites, Merja Zerga (13.2 km2, Morocco), Ghar El Melh (35.6 km2, Tunisia) and Lake Manzala (c. 700 km2, Egypt), are permanent water bodies with at least one well-defined connection with the sea. This article provides an account of each lagoon’s physical characteristics and recent development including the impacts of human activities. The two sites on the Mediterranean (Ghar El Melh and Lake Manzala) are characterised by small tidally driven variations in water level whilst Merga Zerga, on the Atlantic coast, experiences large tidally induced water level variations and so contains large inter-tidal environments. All the three lagoons receive freshwater inflows from their landward margins, varying in magnitude, seasonality and ecological significance. Freshwater inflows from drains strongly influence ecological conditions within Lake Manzala. All the three lagoons have significant biodiversity interest, especially for resident and migratory birds as well as fish, and support local human populations. Each lagoon experienced significant changes during the twentieth century possibly affecting declines in biodiversity value. These largely resulted from agricultural expansion and intensification and include reclamation and hydrological modifications which have both decreased freshwater inflows due to upstream diversions (Merja Zerga and Ghar El Melh) and increased the influx of freshwater through the return of irrigation drainage (Merja Zerga and Lake Manzala). All three sites experienced nutrient enrichment due to agricultural runoff and discharge of domestic wastewater. Industrial waste discharge is a particular, but not exclusive, problem for Lake Manzala. Problems of water quantity and quality will increase through the twenty-first century with increasing demands for water while effects of climate change will enhance freshwater scarcity. Conflicts between human and environmental uses of water will increase and unless improvements in water use efficiency and wastewater treatment can be brought about wetlands including coastal lagoons are likely to suffer further loss and degradation. Carrageenan was extracted from the red seaweed Sarconema scinaioides of Indian waters and was characterized. The crude carrageenan as well as its alkali modified derivative was composed of 3,6-anhydro galactose, 6-O-methyl galactose as well as galactose moieties in various proportions. Linkage analysis exhibited that these two carrageenan samples consisted of 4-linked 3,6-anhydrogalactose residue sulphated at position 2, and 3-linked galactose residue sulphated at position 4. The physicochemical and rheological data along with molecular weight data, FT-IR, 1D and 2D NMR (1H, 13C, COSY and HSQC) spectrometry suggested that the polysaccharide was composed predominantly of iota- along with a small amount of its precursor nu (ν)-carrageenan, unlike the hybrid carrageenans (iota-, pyruvated- and kappa-carrageenans) from this seaweed reported in the literature. This Indian seaweed species would be a potentially important source of iota-carrageenan.  相似文献

This paper presents a comparative analysis of territoriality in three intertidal (Lipophrys pholis, Coryphoblennius galerita, Salaria pavo) and two subtidal (Tripterygion delaisi, Parablennius pilicornis) blennioid fishes. Focal-animal observations of males guarding eggs showed that: (i) intertidal species had smaller territories that were less frequently patrolled; (ii) in subtidal species feeding was limited to the territory, while in intertidal fishes a substantial proportion of the feeding acts occurred outside the defended area; (iii) intertidal species spent less time out of the nest and showed a lower level of locomotory activity; (iv) subtidal species were subjected to a higher number of territorial intrusions with more species intruding their territory, some of them potential egg predators; (v) subtidal species performed several water column displays that played a significant role in courtship, while in intertidal fishes these displays are almost absent. Signalling without the presence of a female was almost absent in intertidal species. It is argued that intertidal fishes minimize the time spent out of the nest and the loss of contact with the substrate, features that may be of high survival value in conditions of strong turbulence. Although intertidal species have a reduced time available for feeding, this may be compensated by lower levels of locomotory activity, territorial defense and risk of egg predation.
