A Monte Carlo simulation based on the population structure of a small-scale human population, the Semai Senoi of Malaysia, has been developed to study the combined effects of group, kin, and individual selection. The population structure resembles D.S. Wilson's structured deme model in that local breeding populations (Semai settlements) are subdivided into trait groups (hamlets) that may be kin-structured and are not themselves demes. Additionally, settlement breeding populations are connected by two-dimensional stepping-stone migration approaching 30% per generation. Group and kin-structured group selection occur among hamlets the survivors of which then disperse to breed within the settlement population. Genetic drift is modeled by the process of hamlet formation; individual selection as a deterministic process, and stepping-stone migration as either random or kin-structured migrant groups. The mechanism for group selection is epidemics of infectious disease that can wipe out small hamlets particularly if most adults become sick and social life collapses. Genetic resistance to a disease is an individual attribute; however, hamlet groups with several resistant adults are less likely to disintegrate and experience high social mortality. A specific human gene, hemoglobin E, which confers resistance to malaria, is studied as an example of the process. The results of the simulations show that high genetic variance among hamlet groups may be generated by moderate degrees of kin-structuring. This strong microdifferentiation provides the potential for group selection. The effect of group selection in this case is rapid increase in gene frequencies among the total set of populations. In fact, group selection in concert with individual selection produced a faster rate of gene frequency increase among a set of 25 populations than the rate within a single unstructured population subject to deterministic individual selection. Such rapid evolution with plausible rates of extinction, individual selection, and migration and a population structure realistic in its general form, has implications for specific human polymorphisms such as hemoglobin variants and for the more general problem of the tempo of evolution as well.  相似文献

Analysis of histories and genealogies from seven relatively unacculturated, swidden-farming Semai settlements shows that the composition of local groups fluctuates through time. This instability is similar to a pattern which Neel and his colleagues have suggested is typical of primitive society, the fission-fusion model. In addition, the individuals comprising Semai fission groups are kinsmen which implies that the number of independent genomes represented is markedly less than the number of individual migrants (the lineal effect). Fission groups may form new villages or fuse with an established settlement. In either case, the genetic effects of such migration are more pronounced than would be expected on the basis of founder effect or random migration. Despite several conspicuous differences in social organization between the Semai and the South American Indians (e.g., bilateral vs. unilineal descent) whose population structure provided the empirical basis for the fission-fusion, lineal effect model, the basic similarities are striking. The Semai case thus lends support to the proposition that this pattern may be of some generality in technologically primitive populations.  相似文献

Abstract

Two methods have been used to evaluate potential endogamy in three settlement populations of a swidden farming group, the Semai Senoi of Malaysia. One method involved determining the number of potential mates available to individuals in each population based on demographic structure and cultural rules concerning appropriate mates. A Monte Carlo simulation of Semai settlement populations was also carried out under two different regimes of mate choice. Both procedures suggest that individuals in the largest Semai settlements are potentially able to marry endogamously but that in smaller groups few potential mates are available and many persons must marry exogamously or remain unmarried. The relatively high rate of marital migration required among small settlement populations implies that newly founded small groups would be unlikely to become sufficiently isolated to form distinct breeding populations.  相似文献

Genetic diversity within and among three wild-type natural populations and one melanic laboratory population of Mythimna separata (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) were evaluated using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) analysis. Although extensive genetic diversity occurs among individuals from different geographic populations (P = 54.5%, h = 0.209, I = 0.305), the majority of the genetic diversity is within populations and not between populations (G(ST) = 0.172), indicating high gene flow (N(M) = 2.403) and suggesting that M. separata in northern China are a part of a single large metapopulation. Genetic diversity in the natural populations was significantly higher than that in the melanic laboratory population (with P = 43.4% versus P = 25.9%, h = 0.173 versus h = 0.086, and I = 0.251 versus I = 0.127), suggesting that the melanic laboratory population is narrowly genetic-based and genetically uniform. Genetic similarities based on AFLP data were calculated, and cluster analysis was preformed to graphically display groupings between individuals and populations. Individuals from the same region were not grouped together in cluster analysis of three natural populations, whereas melanic individuals from laboratory population were grouped together very well. Four subpopulations were clustered into two broad groups. Melanic laboratory population became a single group, which had apparent differentiation from the other group in which three natural subpopulations were included. These results indicated that although high genetic variability existed among the individuals of natural populations, there was little genetic differentiation among three geographic populations that could be explained by the effects of the long distance migration of the oriental armyworm in China enhanced the level of gene flow. Influences of migration on the genetic polymorphism and differentiations that make a significant contribution to evolution in this insect are reviewed.  相似文献

In this paper, data on genetic distances among five tribal populations ae given. Among the five tribes, Koya Dora, Raj Gond and Naikpod are autochthonous populations of the Deccan plateau whereas the other two groups, Pardhan and Lambadi are migrants. Kova Doras were sampled from five distant localities. Genetic markers typed are: A1A2B0, Rho(D) blood group systems glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, transferrin, haptoglobin, groupspecific component, haemoglobin, colour-vision deficiency and tastability to P. T. C. Using frequency data for the above nine genetic loci, genetic distances between the five endogamous tribes, and between the five groups of Koya Dora are calculated by adopting the statistical method of Edwards (1971). While genetic distances between Koya Dora, Raj Gond and Lambadi are minimal, the genetic distance between Pardhans and other tribal groups is maximum. Naikpods occupy an intermediate position. The closeness of Lambadi with Koya Dora and RAJ Gond can be regarded as coincidental. Interestingly, the differences in the genetic distance values between five Koya Dora groups are as great as the differences between the five endogamous tribal populations tested for the same loci. Genetic affinities of these tribal populations are discussed in relation to their ethnic origin migration and geographical isolation.  相似文献

Over a 9-year period from 1982 to 1990 ecological and demographic data were collected on two genetic isolates of Barbary macaques (Macaca sylvanus) in Algeria, from the deciduous oak-forest of Akfadou and from the evergreen cedar-oak forest of the National Park Djurdjura. Macaques at Djurdjura profit from more suitable ecological conditions and have a higher rate of population increase as well as a higher male migration rate than those at Akfadou. Genetic data, gained from 23 genetic markers (blood proteins), proved to be highly influenced by the demographic structure of the groups. The macaque populations of Akfadou and Djurdjura have become genetically differentiated. Group fission, coupled with founder effect (genetic drift) and kin-structured (matrilineal) separation, resulted in a priori genetic diversity between one newly-established group and its parent group.  相似文献

During the Quaternary, southern South American temperate forests were confined to small and isolated refugia. Recolonization could be related not only with location of refugia but also with postglacial phenomena like volcanism, which could have interrupted the expansion of the forests. The aim of this study was to analyze the local effect of volcanism during the postglacial migration of Nothofagus nervosa in a particular region of Argentina were convergence of two migratory routes was suggested. The main question is whether admixture occurred or not and if the current populations are connected by pollen or seed gene flow. Two populations separated by a 3-km-width lava flow were sampled. Buds from 30 individuals of each of the two populations and from a total of 142 juveniles were analyzed. Genetic variation was detected through maternally inherited chloroplast deoxyribonucleic acid (cpDNA; polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphisms of two fragments) and nuclear markers like isozymes (six loci) and simple sequence repeats (three loci). Population genetic parameters were estimated and the existence of a genetic structure was tested with an analysis of molecular variance. Historical gene flow was estimated through the indirect method of the genetic differentiation (F ST). Chloroplast DNA revealed a total genetic differentiation between the two populations indicating completely isolation respecting seed gene flow. On the contrary, the degree of genetic differentiation for the nuclear markers was significantly lower, and moderate levels of historical gene flow through pollen were inferred. The results suggest that in this area, volcanism has played an important local role during the expansion of N. nervosa maintaining these two populations separated. Communicated by A. Kremer  相似文献

Genetic diversity and kin relationships among wild and cultivated populations of the pejibaye palm (Bactris gasipaes, Palmae) using microsatellite markers. The genetic diversity of the peach palm (Pejibaye, Bactris gasipaes Kunth) was evaluated using four nuclear DNA microsatellites in an effort to elucidate the evolution and domestication of this crop. A total of 258 samples from seven wild populations and eleven races were analyzed. All loci were polymorphic and a total of 50 alleles were identified. Average genetic diversity (0.67) and genetic differentiation among populations (Fst=0.16) were high when all populations were considered. Genetic differentiation was lower when the populations were grouped according to their origin into Western and Eastern populations (Fst=0.13 for both). Gene flow was slightly higher among Western populations (Nm=1.71) than among Eastern populations (Nm=1.62). The Putumayo, Yurimaguas, Vaupés, Tucurrique and Guatuso races seem to have been subjected to intense human selection. Hybrid populations exist in Azuero, Tuira, Cauca, Vaupés, Puerto Ayacucho and Solim?es, probably resulting from exchange and introgressions among sympatric wild and cultivated populations. Genetic distance (Dm) was estimated to determine the degree of relationship among populations using the neighbor-joining method; the wild populations from Maracaibo were used as the outgroup. The populations were divided into three general groups: Maracaibo (B. caribaea, B. macana var veragua and B. macana var arapuey), Eastern Amazon (Tembe, Pará and Acre) and a third group with two subgroups, Western (Azuero, Chontilla, Tuira, Cauca, Tucurrique and Guatuso) and Upper Amazon (B. dahlgreniana, Puerto Ayacucho, Solim?es, Vaupés and Putumayo). The genetic relationships strongly support the hypothesis that peach palm was brought into cultivation independently in no less than three areas: the Western Andes (extending into lower Central America); Upper Amazon (extending into the Solim?es and its tributaries), and the Eastern Amazon (extending from Bolivia to the lower Amazon through the Madeira River).  相似文献

Genetic variability within and among 19 landraces and cultivars of red clover ( Trifolium pratense L.) was investigated by means of amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) analysis in order to assess the potential value of Swiss Mattenklee landraces as genetic resources for plant breeding and the preservation of biodiversity. Populations were classified into three groups according to their origin and agronomic features: Mattenklee landraces (8), Mattenklee cultivars (8) and field clover cultivars (3). Analysis of molecular variance based on 276 polymorphic AFLP markers revealed 80% of total variability to be due to variability within populations while 12% were attributed to variability among groups. Stepwise discriminant analysis identified a subset of 126 AFLP markers which best separated individual plants into the three respective groups. Genetic distances between populations were considerably larger among groups than among populations within the same group, providing further evidence for the genetic distinction between Mattenklee landraces, Mattenklee cultivars and field clover cultivars. AFLP markers identified two landrace clusters, containing three and four populations respectively, which, together with one additional landrace, may sufficiently represent the genetic variability of all eight landraces investigated. The results of this study strongly suggest that Swiss Mattenklee landraces form a genetically distinct group of red clover. The data obtained provide criteria on how to efficiently manage, preserve and exploit Mattenklee germplasm.  相似文献

Ten qualitative traits were observed in two isolated human populations in Bosnia for prewar and postwar periods. Due to recent war in Bosnia and Herzegovina two million citizens was forced to migrate. Dramatic migration effects occurred in the investigated populations. Population characteristics found were geographic isolation, high levels of marital distance “zero”, patrilocality and propagation isolation. Relative recessive allele frequencies of ten qualitative traits were calculated. Average heterozigosity, genetic differentiation, total heterozigosity, within populations heterozigosity, genetic distance and relative measures based on results of genetic distance analysis were observed. The total number of observed individuals was 1875. We have observed 1209 individuals in prewar period (Bijela population 731 and Memici population 478) and 666 individuals in the postwar period (Bijela population 248 and Memici population 478). Results ofFst andGst analysis showed changed degree of genetic differentiation across observed loci. Significant changes in differentiation were recorded for crooked little finger and PTC tasting. Modest changes of gene differentiation were recorded for ear lobe type and thumb proximal extensibility. Genetic distance analisis between Bijela and Memici has lower value after then before the war, but genetic distance between Bijela-prewar and Bijela-postwar has higher value, as well as Memici-prewar and Memici-postwar genetic distance. Genetic distance between Bijela-prewar and Memiciprewar, as well as Bijela-postwar and Memici-postwar showed similarity. Constructed dendrogram based on results of genetic distance analyses indicated two clusters groups (1. Bijela-prewar, Memici-prewar; 2. Bijela-postwar, Memici-postwar). Changed genetic differentiation and results of genetic distance analyses indicated possibility of significant impact of forced migration in genetic structure of observed populations.  相似文献

The distributions of surnames have been studied in 12 rural ethnic territorial groups of Sakha Republic (Yakutia). The populations studied are characterized by considerable accumulation of individual surnames, the surname spectra of representative of different ethnic groups living in the same area substantially overlapping. The random isonymy, migration index, surname diversity, and the surname distribution redundancy index display geographic and ethnic differences. The isonymy relationship coefficients calculated for representatives of individual ethnic groups (Yakuts, Evens, and Russians) and for total populations of the settlements studied are determined by the geographic distances between the compared populations and the intensity of migrations.  相似文献

This paper presents componential definitions of two sets of Semai kinship terminology gathered in two Semai settlements. A comparison of these definitions with each other and with Semai rules about proper terminology usage brings several inconsistencies to light. These inconsistencies seem to suggest that a modified componential analysis conforms to the cognitive categories of the Semai if the extensionist hypothesis that terms have both primary and derived meanings is taken into account. Allele distributions of two polymorphisms with variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR), D1S80 and APOB, and four polymorphisms with short tandem repeats (STR), VWA, TH01, CSF1PO, and HPRTB, were analyzed in three Mexican ethnic groups: Huichol, Purepecha, and Tarahumara. Genotype distribution was in agreement with Hardy-Weinberg expectations for each locus and ethnic group. Heterozygosity (H), power of discrimination, and probability of exclusion were estimated. The three groups presented some distinctive genetic features: (1) a diminished genetic diversity (H = 66.8% to 73.4%) and mean number of alleles by locus (5.8 to 6.3) in comparison with Mexican mestizos (H = 78.3%, 10.5 alleles/locus), and (2) uneven allele distributions as evidenced by "distinctive alleles" with high frequencies, especially in the Tarahumara and the Huichol. Genetic relatedness analysis included data from a previously typed mestizo population, the largest and most widely distributed population in Mexico. Allele distribution differentiation was observed among all four groups, except between mestizo and Purepecha (p > 0.05), which was interpreted as indicating a larger Spanish component in the Purepecha as a result of gene flow effects. Although intrapopulation inbreeding (FIS) was not significant, heterozygote deficiency in the total population (FIT) and divergence among populations (FST) were significant (p < 0.05). Genetic distances displayed a closer relationship among mestizos, Purepechas, and Huichols in relation to Tarahumaras. Correlation between the observed genetic features and the geographic isolation level points to genetic drift as the main cause of differentiation among these Mexican populations.  相似文献

Genetic structure can be strongly affected by landscape features and variation through time and space of demographic parameters such as population size and migration rate. The fossorial water vole (Arvicola terrestris) is a cyclic species characterized by large demographic fluctuations over short periods of time. The outbreaks do not occur everywhere at the same time but spread as a wave at a regional scale. This leads to a pattern of large areas (i.e. some hundreds of km2), each with different vole abundances, at any given time. Here, we describe the abundance and genetic structures in populations of the fossorial water vole. We use the data to try to understand how landscape and demographic features act to shape the genetic structure. The spatial variability of vole abundance was assessed from surface indices, collected in spring 2002 (April) in eastern central France. Genetic variability was analysed using eight microsatellite loci at 23 localities sampled between October 2001 and April 2002. We found some congruence between abundance and genetic structures. At a regional scale, the genetic disruptions were associated with both sharp relief and transition between an area of low abundance and another of high abundance. At a local scale, we observed a variation of the isolation-by-distance pattern according to the abundance level of vole populations. From these results we suggest that the dispersal pattern in cyclic rodent populations varies throughout the demographic cycle.  相似文献

The genetic structure of European grape phylloxera populations, Daktulosphaira vitifoliae (Homoptera: Phylloxeridae), was analyzed using 6 polymorphic microsatellite markers. Genetic diversity data of 6 populations originating from northern and southern European viticultural regions was assessed for geographic differences, and the structure of 2 additional populations was examined in more detail, focusing on specific host plant and habitat characteristics. To test for "signatures" of clonal reproduction, different population genetic measures were applied to the data obtained from these populations. A total of 195 multilocus genotypes were detected in 360 individuals tested. Significant deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, negative FIS values (from -0.148 to -0.658 per population), and the presence of multicopy genotypes revealed that the current major reproductive mode at each of the locations tested was asexual. The high genotypic diversity detected within and among populations, however, together with the occurrence of unique D. vitifoliae genotypes, indicates sexual recombination events took place, probably prior to the multiple introductions into Europe. The absence of overlapping genotypes between the sampling sites suggests low migration rates among the populations studied and implies that the main mode of insect dispersal is through infested plant material carried by human agency. The specific features of European D. vitifoliae habitats are illustrated to discuss the role of habitat and life cycle in the genetic structure of this globally important pest aphid species.  相似文献

Genetic variation at 9 autosomal microsatellite loci (CFS1R, TH01, PLA2A, F13A1, CYP19, LPL, D20S481, D20S473, and D20S604) has been characterized in 16 Asian and Oceanic populations, mostly from mainland and insular Southeast Asia. The neighbor-joining tree and the principal coordinates analysis of the genetic relationships of these populations show a clear separation of Papua New Guinea Highlanders and, to a lesser extent, Malayan aborigines (Orang Asli or Semai) from the rest of the populations. Although the number of markers used in this study appears to be inadequate for clarifying the patterns of genetic relationships among the studied populations, in the principal coordinates analysis a geographic trend is observed in the mainland and insular Southeast Asian populations. Furthermore, in an attempt to contrast the extent of variation between autosomal and Y-chromosome-specific microsatellite loci and to reveal potential differences in the patterns of male and female migrations, we have also compared genetic variation at these 9 autosomal loci with variation observed at 5 Y-chromosome-specific microsatellites in a common set of 14 Asian populations.  相似文献

Genetic diversity within and among populations was investigated using RAPD-PCR assays in a rare species, Afgekia sericea Craib. Two hundred and sixty-nine individuals were sampled from nine geographically isolated populations from northeastern Thailand. This study includes 73 RAPD markers. Within population polymorphism as measured by percentage of polymorphic RAPDs, varied between 38.4% and 60.3%. Genetic variability was measured using Shannon's information index and partitioned into between- and within-population components. Overall, genetic variation among A. sericea populations was high (Hsp-Hpop)/Hsp=48.2%. The genetic diversity for the species (Hsp) was 43.2%. Mean of within-population values (Hpop) for all populations was 0.224. The total genetic diversity was explained by high variation among populations (mean Gst=0.426), which is consistent with low gene flow among populations (Nm=0.35). High between-population genetic variation observed in this study could be explained by limited migration through seed and/or pollen dispersal among populations. Conservation strategies of A. sericea are discussed in the context of these results. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Sindora glabra, one of the second-class national protective plants in China, has important ecological and commercial values. To understand the genetic diversity and structure of S. glabra, eleven natural populations from four areas of Hainan Island in China were analyzed by inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers. Thirteen primers were screened out and used to amplify 157 DNA samples. A total of 122 bands were obtained, among which 114 (93.4%) bands were polymorphic. Genetic parameters including average number of effective alleles (1.547), Nei's gene diversity (0.321), Shannon's information index (0.482), and gene differentiation coefficient (0.1944) revealed a high level of genetic diversity maintained in S. glabra populations. The variation within populations accounted for 85.6% of total variation based on analysis of molecular variance. Genetic distance analysis showed that 11 populations could be divided into three groups and populations from the same areas were classified as one group, suggesting that high genetic diversity of S. glabra was attributable to geographic isolation. Together, introduction of germplasm from distant natural distribution areas would be a sound strategy for germplasm resource conservation of S. glabra and selection of elite individuals from populations of far relationship for hybridization is of great importance for breeding improvement programs in future.  相似文献
