Changes in the biosciences and their relations to society over the last decades provide a unique opportunity to examine whether or not such changes leave traces in the language we use to talk about them. In this article we examine metaphors used in English-speaking press coverage to conceptualize a new type of (interdisciplinary) bioscience: synthetic biology. Findings show that three central metaphors were used between 2008 and May 2010. They exploit social and cultural knowledge about books, computers and engines and are linked to knowledge of three revolutions in science and society (the printing, information and industrial revolutions). These three central metaphors are connected to each other through the concepts of reading/writing, designing and mass production and they focus on science as a revolutionary process rather than on the end results or products of science. Overall, we observed the use of a complex bricolage of mixed metaphors and chains of metaphors that root synthetic biology in historical events and achievements, while at the same time extolling its promises for the future.  相似文献

Brick by brick: metabolism and tumor cell growth   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Tumor cells display increased metabolic autonomy in comparison to non-transformed cells, taking up nutrients and metabolizing them in pathways that support growth and proliferation. Classical work in tumor cell metabolism focused on bioenergetics, particularly enhanced glycolysis and suppressed oxidative phosphorylation (the 'Warburg effect'). But the biosynthetic activities required to create daughter cells are equally important for tumor growth, and recent studies are now bringing these pathways into focus. In this review, we discuss how tumor cells achieve high rates of nucleotide and fatty acid synthesis, how oncogenes and tumor suppressors influence these activities, and how glutamine metabolism enables macromolecular synthesis in proliferating cells.  相似文献

The performance of a continuous bioreactor containing Clostridium beijerinckii BA101 adsorbed onto clay brick was examined for the fermentation of acetone, butanol, and ethanol (ABE). Dilution rates from 0.3 to 2.5 h–1 were investigated with the highest solvent productivity of 15.8 g l–1 h–1 being obtained at 2.0 h–1. The solvent yield at this dilution rate was found to be 0.38 g g–1 and total solvent concentration was 7.9 g l–1. The solvent yield was maximum at 0.45 at a dilution rate of 0.3 h–1. The maximum solvent productivity obtained was found to be 2.5 times greater than most other immobilized continuous and cell recycle systems previously reported for ABE fermentation. A higher dilution rate (above 2.0 h–1) resulted in acid production rather than solvent production. This reactor was found to be stable for over 550 h. Scanning electron micrographs (SEM) demonstrated that a large amount of C. beijerinckii cells were adsorbed onto the brick support.  相似文献

Using the example of psychosomatic diagnosis, I argue that the clinical context has unique epistemological constraints that limit the certainty of diagnosis and so make meaning indeterminate for sufferer and healer. As a result, forms of clinical truth are borrowed from the therapeutic context to create and authorize meanings for ambiguous or ill-defined conditions and inchoate suffering. Diagnostic interpretation is concerned with classification and legitimation through the production of authoritative truth. In contrast, therapeutic interpretation is fundamentally concerned with the pragmatic problem of how to continue and hence, with the improvisation of meaning. These different ends give rise to tensions and contradictions in psychosomatic theory and practice. While authority is necessary to provide a structure on which variations of meaning can be improvised, authoritative meanings may also restrict the possibilities for invention by clinician and patient. The goal of patient and physician is to create enough certainty to diminish the threat of the inchoate while preserving enough ambiguity to allow for fresh improvisation. Accounts of illness meaning must recognize the interdependence of normative rigidity and metaphoric invention.A RUMBLING: truth itself has appeared among humankind in the very thick of their flurrying metaphors.  相似文献
