The immune response of shrimp exposed to severe hypoxia, 1 mg O2ml−1for 24 h, was measured in terms total haemocyte count (THC), differential haemocyte count (DHC), phenoloxidase activity (PO) and respiratory burst by NBT reduction. Results showed that hypoxia induced a significant decrease (P<5%) of the THC due to a significant decrease of semi-granular cells (SGC) (P<5%) and hyaline cells (HC) (P<5%). There was also a decrease in the NBT reduction. On the other hand, PO activity increased significantly (P<1%) and seemed to be related to a lower amount of plasma inhibitors regulating the prophenoloxidase system. Experimental infection with a virulentVibrio alginolyticuswas carried out by intramuscular injection of 2×104colony forming units (cfu) per shrimp. The mortality of stressed shrimp was 48% while the mortality of control shrimp was 32%. This difference was significant (P<1%). The variations of immunological parameters, except for the PO activity, seem to be consistent with thein vivoresponse against the pathogenicVibrio. Coyright 1998 Academic Press 相似文献

Perillus bioculatus(F.) is sometimes considered a generalist but has most often been recorded as predator of Colorado potato beetle (CPB),Leptinotarsa decemlineata.(Say). This study was designed to analyze prey selection inP. bioculatuswith respect to factors that may lead to specialization. To establish if parental prey determines preference in na?̈ve progeny, prey selection experiments were conducted with the CPB and two unusual prey, the yellow mealwormTenebrio molitor(L.) and the house cricketAcheta domesticus(L.). Na?̈ve nymphs reared from yellow mealworm-fed parents in the absence of contact with the CPB initiated feeding more frequently on CPB (81.4%) than on cricket prey (69.6%) (P = 0.038), suggesting genetically inheritable preference for CPB. Progeny from CPBfed parents initiated feeding more frequently on CPB prey (93.3%) than on yellow mealworm prey (76.6%) (P = 0.0001), but progeny from yellow mealwormfed parents initiated feeding on yellow mealworm prey as frequently (89.2%) as on CPB (95.0%) (P = 0.613). Similarly, progeny from CPB-fed parents established proboscis contact more frequently on CPB (39.2%) than on house cricket prey (25.0%) (P = 0.008), whereas those from cricket-fed parents probed house cricket prey as frequently (12.5%) as CPB prey (15.4%) (P = 0.416). Results confirm specialization ofP. bioculatustoward CPB or related prey and suggest genetically inheritable as well as maternally reinforcible affinity toward CPB prey. However, affinity of na?̈ve nymphs for the CPB can be lowered by rearing parents on alternative prey, increasing their chances of survival when alternative prey must be relied upon. 相似文献

Series of experiments were undertaken to investigate whether application of Precocene II (PII) to parasitized S. littoralis larvae can influence their THCs and DHCs. PII was applied in single dose treatments (70μg/5 μl/dose). Haemolymph samples were taken at daily intervals from day 3 to day 8 post‐treatments. Two distinct alterations were noted; first, PII‐treatments caused significant decrease in THCs. Once the parasitoid larvae emerge from either treated or untreated hosts, a sharp decline in THCs was observed. The second effect was changes in DHCs of S. littoralis larvae. In controls, haemocyte types could be arranged in descending order due to their relative occurrence into plasmatocytes (PLs), prohaemocytes (PRs), spherule cells (SPs), granular cells (GRs) and oenocytoids (OEs). This order changed in treated hosts to PLs, GRs, PRs, SPs and OEs, i.e., GRs that were less prevalent in the haemolymph of control larvae increased significantly in PII‐treated hosts. In the latters, sharp rise in GRs levels followed parasitoid emergence. OEs cells were scarce in both treated and untreated hosts. No significant difference was observed between the overall means of PLs in both types of host larvae. But GRs‐PRs was markedly altered in treated larvae. 相似文献

Abstract Haemocytes circulating in the haemolymph protect insects against pathogens that enter the haemocoel. Changes in haemocyte morphology and differences in haemocyte counts during the immune response of Culex quinquefasciatus Say (Diptera: Culicidae) to microfilariae of Wuchereria bancrofti (Cobbold) (Spirurida: Onchocercidae) were investigated in the present study. The mean number of total haemocytes was significantly elevated in infected mosquitoes (P < 0.001), reaching a peak on the third day post‐infection. Differential counts show that mean numbers of prohaemocytes, plasmatocytes, granular cells and oenocytoids increased significantly after infection with microfilariae granulocytes compared to the control and näive groups of Cx. quinquefasciatus (P < 0.05). Changes in proportional counts of haemocytes were also analysed in haemolymph perfusates of Cx. quinquefasciatus infected with W. bancrofti. On the first day post‐infection, infected mosquitoes showed an increase in the proportion of prohaemocytes (18.8% compared to 9.6% for the control) and of oenocytoids (7.1% compared to 4.7% control); however, they exhibited lower levels of plasmatocytes (36.6% compared to 42.1% control) and granular cells (36.1% compared to 41.4% control). On day 14 post‐infection, similar changes were observed for these haemocyte types, except that the proportion of granular cells was significantly greater than the control (41.2% compared to 31.3% control). Although an enhancement of prohaemocyte numbers was observed, this cellular type did not show any ultrastructural alteration. On the other hand, granular cells, plasmatocytes and oenocytoids presented morphological alterations indicative of innate immunological activation in mosquitoes infected with W. bancrofti. 相似文献

1. Diverse environmental factors contribute to the evolution of host immunity and host–parasite interactions. However, the effect of insecticides on the insect immune system is less well understood. 2. This study investigated the variation in haemocyte density, phenoloxidase (PO), and total PO activities in the Ostrinia furnacalis larvae following sublethal treatment of tebufenozede and their susceptibility to Escherichia coli infection. 3. Surprisingly, it was found that O. furnacalis larvae exposed to the insecticide have significantly higher haemocyte density, and active and total PO activities than those not exposed. Moreover, when infected with E. coli, O. furnacalis larvae treated with tebufenozide survive much better with lower bacterial load than those not treated. 4. This study demonstrates that insecticide may change the immunity of insects and potentially have an impact on their interactions with parasites. 相似文献

Field studies were conducted in 1992 and 1993 in Hermiston, Oregon, to evaluate the efficacy of transgenic Bt potato (Newleaf®, which expresses the insecticidal protein Cry3Aa) and conventional insecticide spray programs against the important potato pest, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say), Colorado potato beetle (CPB), and their relative impact on non-target arthropods in potato ecosystems. Results from the two years of field trials demonstrated that Newleaf potato plants were highly effective in suppressing populations of CPB, and provided better CPB control than weekly sprays of a microbial Bt-based formulation containing Cry3Aa, bi-weekly applications of permethrin, or early- and mid-season applications of systemic insecticides (phorate and disulfoton). When compared with conventional potato plants not treated with any insecticides, the effective control of CPB by Newleaf potato plants or weekly sprays of a Bt-based formulation did not significantly impact the abundance of beneficial predators or secondary potato pests. In contrast to Newleaf potato plants or microbial Bt formulations, however, bi-weekly applications of permethrin significantly reduced the abundance of several major generalist predators such as spiders (Araneae), big-eyed bugs (Geocorus sp.), damsel bugs (Nabid sp.), and minute pirate bugs (Orius sp.), and resulted in significant increases in the abundance of green peach aphid (GPA), Myzus persicae (Sulzer) – vector of viral diseases, on the treated potato plots. While systemic insecticides appeared to have reduced the abundance of some plant sap-feeding insects such as GPA, lygus bugs, and leafhoppers, early and mid-season applications of these insecticides had no significant impact on populations of the major beneficial predators. Thus, transgenic Bt potato, Bt-based microbial formulations and systemic insecticides appeared to be compatible with the development of integrated pest management (IPM) against other potato pests such as GPA because these CPB control measures have little impact on major natural enemies. In contrast, the broad-spectrum pyrethroid insecticide (permethrin) is less compatible with IPM programs against GPA and the potato leafroll viral disease. 相似文献

The current work investigated the immune response of Spodoptera exigua Hübner (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) when challenged with two entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs), Steinernema carpocapsae (Weiser) and Heterorhabditis bacteriophora (Poinar). The cellular and humoral defences were considered in this study. The haemocytes were observed around H. bacteriophora, but no haemocyte was found around S. carpocapsae. In larvae treated with H. bacteriophora and S. carpocapsae, total haemocyte counts (THCs) reached maximum levels at 4 and 12 hours post-injection (hpi), respectively, but decreased with the proliferation of symbiotic bacteria. In the humoral defence, there was no significant difference between EPNs on phenoloxidase (PO) activity. Phospholipase A2 (PLA2) and protease activity levels in the initial time post-injection were higher in the larvae treated with S. carpocapsae than in H. bacteriophora. In the following, the roles of symbiotic bacteria and axenic infective juveniles (IJs) in suppressing the immune system were studied separately. Maximum THC levels were observed in larvae treated with axenic nematodes and minimum THC levels were recorded in the live Xenorhabdus nematophila treatment. In the humoral defence, PLA2 activity with axenic S. carpocapsae was suppressed at 4 hpi, while in monoxenic S. carpocapsae the PLA2 level was increased to the maximum amount at 8 hpi. PO activity with monoxenic S. carpocapsae decreased gradually by 4 hpi; in live X. nematophila, it decreased from 0.5 to 16 hpi, while in axenic S. carpocapsae, it increased slowly from 0.5 to 16 hpi. The current work showed the synergistic effect of nematode and its bacterium in the suppression of the immune system and highlighted the role of the symbiont in inhibition of immune responses. 相似文献

Colorado potato beetle (CPB), Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), is a global destructive pest of potato, Solanum tuberosum L. (Solanaceae). It is also an important quarantine pest in China, but its dispersal history, occurrence, and economic impact in China have not yet been reported. We determined the current distribution of CPB and reconstructed its dispersal routes. We also investigated the density of CPB in China in 2006, 2007, 2009, and 2010, and estimated the economic impact of CPB in China. In 1993, CPB was first detected in Xinjiang and subsequently spread eastward. The CPB entered China at three distinct points in Xinjiang: in Huocheng County, Tacheng City, and Habahe County. As of 2010, CPB had invaded 38 counties and cities in China, with a distribution area of 277 000 km2, between 42°40′–48°28′N and 80°15′–90°41′E. The distribution area could be divided into four zones (from south to north): Ili River Valley, northern slope of the Tianshan Mountains, Tacheng Basin, and Altay. The average annual dispersal rates in the four zones were 18, 45, 12, and 24 km year?1, respectively. In China, CPB seriously damages potato, impacts eggplant, Solanum melongena L., and occasionally harms tomato, Solanum lycopersicum L. The current annual economic loss caused by CPB in China is estimated to be 3.2 million USD. The potential annual economic losses after completion of its invasion in China is estimated to be 235 million USD. Future invasion pathways, factors affecting CPB dispersal, and control measures were discussed. 相似文献

1. The density‐dependent prophylaxis hypothesis predicts that individuals in high‐density populations will invest more resources in immune defence than individuals at lower densities. 2. However, recent work suggests that this prediction may not apply to all situations; solitarious species may paradoxically have higher scores than crowded counterparts in certain immune assays. 3. To investigate the relationship between a key immune parameter and field population densities, the total haemocyte counts (THCs) of Australian plague locusts (Chortoicetes terminifera) from three population densities in Western Australia were compared. 4. THCs were negatively correlated with field population densities, and locusts removed from a marching band and kept in isolation had increased THCs relative to group‐housed controls. 5. These results demonstrate that immune investment can inversely relate to population density in field conditions. 6. We suggest that isolated locusts increase their haemocyte densities relative to crowded conspecifics in response to potentially greater exposure to parasitoids and nematodes. 相似文献

Background

Early onset of lung injury is considerable common after cardiac surgery and is associated with increasing in morbidity and mortality, but current clinical predictors for the occurrence of this complication always have limited positive warning value. This study aimed to evaluate whether elevated plasma levels of human neutrophil peptides (HNPs) 1–3 herald impaired lung function in infants and young children after cardiac surgery necessitating cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB).

Methods

Consecutive children younger than 3 years old who underwent cardiac surgery were prospectively enrolled. Plasma concentrations of HNPs 1–3 and inflammatory cytokines were measured before, and immediately after CPB, as well as at 1 h, 12 h, and 24 h after CPB.

Results

Thirty patients were enrolled, 18 (60%) of whom were infants. Plasma levels of HNPs 1–3 and the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6) significantly increased immediately after CPB (P?<?0.001), while IL-8 increased 1 h after the CPB operation (P?=?0.002). The anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 levels were also significantly elevated immediately after CPB compared with the baseline (P?<?0.001). The stepwise multiple linear regression analysis showed that the plasma HNPs 1–3 levels immediately after CPB was independent correlated with the declined lung function, as reflected by the PaO2/FiO2 ratio on the first 2 days after operation (for the first day: OR, ?1.067, 95% CI, ?0.548 to ?1.574; P?<?0.001; for the second day: OR, ?0.667, 95% CI, ?0.183 to ?1.148; P?=?0.009) and prolonged mechanical ventilation time (OR, 0.039, 95% CI, 0.005 to 0.056; P?=?0.011). Plasma levels of HNPs 1–3 and IL-10 returned to the baseline values, while IL-6 and IL-8 levels remained significantly higher than baseline 24 h after CPB (P?≤?0.01).

Conclusions

Elevated HNPs 1–3 levels immediately after CPB correlate with impaired lung function, and HNPs 1–3 could serve as a quantifiable early alarmin biomarker for onset of lung injury in infants and young children undergoing cardiac surgery with CPB.

Sixty-eight sera from the acute, recurrent, and provoked types of female genital herpes were compared for the seroprevalence of herpes simplex virus (HSV) types 1 and 2 by immunodot assay using HSV glycoprotein G. In the HSV-1-isolated patients, no HSV-2 antibodies were detected, whereas in the HSV-2-isolated patients, HSV-1 seroprevalence was 9% for the acute type, 89% for the provoked type (P< 0.005), and 55% for the recurrent type (P<0.05). The natural history of female genital herpes and the possible protective role of pre-existing antibodies in preventing the acquisition or clinical manifestation of a subsequent HSV infection are discussed. 相似文献

Landscape structure, which can be manipulated in agricultural landscapes through crop rotation and modification of field edge habitats, can have important effects on connectivity among local populations of insects. Though crop rotation is known to influence the abundance of Colorado potato beetle (CPB; Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say) in potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) fields each year, whether crop rotation and intervening edge habitat also affect genetic variation among populations is unknown. We investigated the role of landscape configuration and composition in shaping patterns of genetic variation in CPB populations in the Columbia Basin of Oregon and Washington, and the Central Sands of Wisconsin, USA. We compared landscape structure and its potential suitability for dispersal, tested for effects of specific land cover types on genetic differentiation among CPB populations, and examined the relationship between crop rotation distances and genetic diversity. We found higher genetic differentiation between populations separated by low potato land cover, and lower genetic diversity in populations occupying areas with greater crop rotation distances. Importantly, these relationships were only observed in the Columbia Basin, and no other land cover types influenced CPB genetic variation. The lack of signal in Wisconsin may arise as a consequence of greater effective population size and less pronounced genetic drift. Our results suggest that the degree to which host plant land cover connectivity affects CPB genetic variation depends on population size and that power to detect landscape effects on genetic differentiation might be reduced in agricultural insect pest systems. 相似文献

Abstract
 • 1 Orientation of second‐ and fourth‐instar Colorado potato beetle (CPB) Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), to volatiles emitted from a solanaceous host, potato, and seven synthetic blends or three individual chemicals emitted by potato plants were investigated in laboratory bioassays.
 • 2 Both second‐ and fourth‐instar CPB were attracted to intact and mechanically damaged (MD) potato foliage. When offered a choice between intact and MD foliage, no preference was observed.
 • 3 Among seven synthetic blends tested (of which six are attractive to adult CPB), second‐ and fourth‐instar CPB were attracted only to a single three‐component blend comprising (±)‐linalool, methyl salicylate, and (Z)‐3‐hexenyl acetate. Individual compounds and two‐component blends were inactive. No significant difference was noted between larval responses to the attractive synthetic blend vs. MD potato foliage.
 • 4 Second‐and fourth‐instar larvae had similar thresholds for behaviour for the three‐component blend (50 µg source load). Female CPB were attracted to source loads 10× below the larval threshold (5 µg). Male CPB were the most sensitive life form tested with a behavioural threshold at 0.5 µg source load which was 10× and 100× below female and larval thresholds, respectively
 • 5 This is the first report of a synthetic chemical attractant for CPB larvae. As both larval and adult CPB are attracted to a single chemical blend, the usefulness of the attractant as a component of an attracticide or ‘push‐pull’ strategies for management of pestiferous populations is enhanced.

The wild Bolivian potato, Solanum berthaultii Hawkes, has been used as a source of resistance to the Colorado potato beetle (CPB), Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say, one of the most significant pests of potato. In this study, two reciprocal backcross S. tuberosum x S. berthaultii potato progenies, BCB and BCT, were mapped with RFLP markers and screened for resistance to CPB consumption, oviposition and defoliation. The genotypic and phenotypic data were combined and analysed to locate quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for resistance to CPB. Three QTLs on three chromosomes in BCB, and two QTLs on two chromosomes in BCT influenced resistance. The QTLs were generally additive but one instance of epistasis was noted. Each QTL accounted for 4–12% of the phenotypic variation observed in resistance. In the more resistant BCB population, a three QTL model explained ca. 20% of the variation in CPB oviposition. When alleles at the three QTLs were homozygous S. berthaultii, oviposition was reduced ca. 60% compared to the heterozygotes. The QTLs for resistance to CPB were compared to those previously identified for the type A and B glandular trichomes, which have been implicated in resistance in the same progenies. Generally, the QTLs for resistance to CPB coincided with loci associated with the glandular trichomes confirming the importance of the glandular trichomes in mediating resistance. However, a relatively strong and consistent QTL for insect resistance in both BCB and BCT on chromosome 1 was observed that was not associated with any trichome traits, suggesting the trichomes may not account for all of the resistance observed in these progenies. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess the effects of potato plants expressing a barley cystatin on a potentially cystatin-susceptible natural enemy by predation on susceptible and non-susceptible preys feeding on the plant. We have focussed on the impact of the variant HvCPI-1 C68 → G, in which the only cysteine residue was changed by a glycine, on the growth and digestive physiology of the Colorado potato beetle (CPB), Leptinotarsa decemlineata, and the Egyptian cotton leafworm (ECW), Spodoptera littoralis. Moreover, we have studied the prey-mediated effects of the barley cystatin at the third trophic level, using the predatory spined soldier bug (SSB), Podisus maculiventris, as a model. Feeding trials conducted with CPB larvae reared on transgenic potato plants expressing the C68 → G variant resulted in significantly lower weight gains compared to those fed on non-transformed (NT) plants. On the contrary, larger weight gains were obtained when ECW larvae, that lack digestive cysteine proteases, were reared on transgenic potato expressing the cystatin, as compared to larvae fed on NT plants. No negative effects on survival and growth were observed when SSB nymphs were exposed to HvCPI-1 C68 → G by predation on either CPB or ECW larvae reared on transgenic potato plants expressing the barley cystatin, despite the fact that the inhibitor suppressed in vitro gut proteolysis of the predatory bug. To investigate the physiological background, biochemical analysis were carried out on guts of insects dissected at the end of the feeding assays. Fernando álvarez-Alfageme and Manuel Martínez are contributed equally to this work. 相似文献

The supplementing of sow diets with lipids during pregnancy and lactation has been shown to reduce sow condition loss and improve piglet performance. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of supplemental palm oil (PO) on sow performance, plasma metabolites and hormones, milk profiles and pre-weaning piglet development. A commercial sow ration (C) or an experimental diet supplemented with 10% extra energy in the form of PO, were provided from day 90 of gestation until weaning (24 to 28 days postpartum) in two groups of eight multiparous sows. Gestation length of PO sows increased by 1 day (P<0.05). Maternal BW changes were similar throughout the trial, but loss of backfat during lactation was reduced in PO animals (C: −3.6±0.8 mm; PO: −0.1±0.8 mm; P<0.01). Milk fat was increased by PO supplementation (C day 3: 8.0±0.3% fat; PO day 3: 9.1±0.3% fat; C day 7: 7.8±0.5% fat; PO day 7: 9.9±0.5% fat; P<0.05) and hence milk energy yield of PO sows was also elevated (P<0.05). The proportion of saturated fatty acids was greater in colostrum from PO sows (C: 29.19±0.31 g/100 g of fat; PO: 30.77±0.36 g/100 g of fat; P<0.01). Blood samples taken on 105 days of gestation, within 24 h of farrowing, day 7 of lactation and at weaning (28±3 days post-farrowing) showed there were no differences in plasma concentrations of triacylglycerol, non-esterified fatty acids, insulin or IGF-1 throughout the trial. However, circulating plasma concentrations of both glucose and leptin were elevated during lactation in PO sows (P<0.05 and P<0.005, respectively) and thyroxine was greater at weaning in PO sows (P<0.05). Piglet weight and body composition were similar at birth, as were piglet growth rates throughout the pre-weaning period. A period of 7 days after birth, C piglets contained more body fat, as indicated by their lower fat-free mass per kg (C: 66.4±0.8 arbitrary units/kg; PO: 69.7±0.8 arbitrary unit/kg; P<0.01), but by day 14 of life this situation was reversed (C: 65.8±0.6 arbitrary units/kg; PO: 63.6±0.6 arbitrary units/kg; P<0.05). Following weaning, PO sows exhibited an increased ratio of male to female offspring at their subsequent farrowing (C: 1.0±0.3; PO: 2.2±0.2; P<0.05). We conclude that supplementation of sow diets with PO during late gestation and lactation appears to increase sow milk fat content and hence energy supply to piglets. Furthermore, elevated glucose concentrations in the sow during lactation may be suggestive of impaired glucose homoeostasis. 相似文献

Long-term alcohol consumption can cause oxidative stress and cytokines induction, which are associated with free radicals. Quercetin, one of the most widely distributed flavonoids in plants, is a natural antioxidant. We investigated the hypothesis that quercetin could prevent the ethanol-induced oxidative stress and decreases tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interferon-γ (INF-γ) as pro-inflammatory cytokines. Twenty-eight rats were randomly divided into control group (C), ethanol treatment group (EtOH) (~1 ml/day, 80%; 2 g/kg body wt), intragastrically (i.g.), quercetin treatment group (Q), (100 mg/kg-body wt per 3 days) i.g. and ethanol plus quercetin treatment group (EtOH + Q) (1 ml/day, 80% of ethanol and 100 mg/kg-body wt of quercetin per 3 days) i.g. for 30 days Plasma thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) levels and protein carbonyl content were significantly higher in the EtOH group than the C group (P < 0.01). On the other hand, TBARS level and protein carbonyl content in the EtOH + Q group was decreased significantly by quercetin (P < 0.05, P < 0.01; respectively). While GSH levels in whole blood decreased in EtOH group compared to C group, they increased significantly by quercetin (P < 0.05). Plasma ALT, TNF-α and IFN-γ levels increased significantly in the EtOH group compared to control group (P < 0.05, P < 0.01, P < 0.01, respectively), but they decreased significantly in the EtOH + Q group in comparison with EtOH group (P < 0.05, P < 0.01, P < 0.01, respectively). Our results demonstrate that quercetin treatment may provide a protection as reflected by decreased plasma TBARS, protein carbonyls, TNF-α, INF-γ and ALT levels against ethanol-induced oxidative damage. 相似文献

Control of the Colorado potato beetle (CPB), Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), with the entomopathogenic nematode Heterorhabditis marelata Liu and Berry (Nematoda: Heterorhabditidae) was examined in the laboratory and in potato fields in north central Oregon. This research tested the hypothesis that varying nitrogen fertilizer levels would affect foliar alkaloid levels, which would stress the host, and allow increased nematode reproduction and long‐term control of the CPB. Laboratory results indicated that nematodes tended to reproduce more readily in CPB fed on potato plants with high levels of fertilizer. Field trials tested CPB population responses to four treatments: application of nematodes vs. no nematodes, with application of low vs. high rates of nitrogen fertilizer. The higher nitrogen application rate increased field foliar levels of the alkaloids solanine by 35%, and chaconine by 41% over the season. Nematodes were applied twice during the season, causing a 50% reduction in adult CPB populations, and producing six times as many dead prepupae in nematode‐treated soil samples as in the untreated samples. However, no reproducing nematodes were found in the 303 dead prepupae and pupae collected from nematode‐treated plots. Nitrogen fertilizer levels, and their related alkaloid levels, did not affect nematode infection rates or reproduction in the field. Foliar alkaloid levels of plants from the growth chamber were 3–6‐fold as high as those in the field, which may explain the variation in nematode response to nitrogen applications to host plants of the CPB. Heterorhabditis marelata is effective for controlling CPB in the field, and does not have negative non‐target effects on one of the most common endemic CPB control agents, Myiopharus doryphorae (Riley) (Diptera: Tachinidae), but the low rate of nematode reproduction cannot be manipulated through alkaloid stress to the beetle. Until H. marelata can be mass‐produced in an inexpensive manner, it will not be a commercially viable control for CPB. 相似文献

Field experiments were conducted in 1989 and 1990 to evaluate the timing of the initial spray application of Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. tenebrianis, relative to egg development in the field, for control of the Colorado potato beetle (CPB), Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say) in potatoes. Effective potato beetle control was achieved with B. thuringiensis if the initial spray was applied during the period beginning when an average of 1-30% of marked egg masses had hatched, extending to 4 days after 30% egg hatch, of the initial flush of eggs. Significantly greater defoliation, numbers of third and fourth instar CPB and lower yields occurred in plots when the initial B. thuringiensis application was delayed until 6 days after 30% egg hatch, compared with plots treated at 30% egg hatch. In 1990, no improvement in CPB control was gained by application of the initial B. thuringiensis spray at first observation of CPB egg deposition or at first egg hatch, compared with application at 30% egg hatch. Recommendations for proper timing of B. thuringiensis sprays for effective CPB management are presented. 相似文献
