Pollen ontogeny and sporoderm development in Aristolochia manshuriensis were studied for elaboration of the inaperturete pollen ontogeny in Aristolochia. Despite the formation of apertures in the tetrad period, the sporoderm in A. manshuriensis becomes inaperturate at the end of the free microspore period. A similar immature exine is also detected in A. macrophylla. Variants of aperture formation in the tetrad period in A. manshuriensis or formation of a polar aperture in the free microspore period in A. clematitis are associated with types of microsporogenesis. The ectexine and endexine in A. manshuriensis are formed over a longer time and reached much greater thickness than those in A. clematitis. The endexine and intine in A. manshuriensis do not reach a mature state, similar to A. clematitis. The exine of A. manshuriensis cracks, releasing a pollen tube enveloped by the intine. This fact does not hinder the functioning of the male gametophyte of A. manshuriensis.  相似文献

The leaves of 52 species of Lithocarpus in China were studied. The adaxial leaf epidermis was investigated by light microscopy. Epidermal cells of the adaxial surface were classified into three types on the basis of the outline of their anticlinal walls, i.e. sinuate, straight and curved. The abaxial leaf epidermis was investigated by light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The following types of trichome were observed: appressed parallel tuft, stellate, fused stellate, papillae, stipitate fasciculate, solitary unicellular, appressed laterally attached unicellular, curly thin‐walled unicellular, bulbous and thin‐walled peltate. The fused stellate, appressed laterally attached unicellular and curly thin‐walled unicellular trichomes were reported in Lithocarpus for the first time. The appressed parallel tuft trichome, which is recognized as a salient characteristic of Lithocarpus, was not found in 15 species. A cladistic analysis was performed on the basis of the leaf epidermal features. According to the leaf epidermal features and several morphological characteristics, 26 of the 52 species could be divided into seven groups. Similar groups can be found in Barnett's and Camus' systems. The trichomes of four genera in Fagaceae are listed and compared. Lithocarpus had 14 types of trichome, 11 of which were identical to types found in Quercus, more than in Castanopsis and Cyclobalanopsis.   • Pollination success of highly specialised flowers is susceptible to fluctuations of the pollinator fauna. Mediterranean Aristolochia rotunda has deceptive trap flowers exhibiting a highly specialised pollination system. The sole pollinators are kleptoparasitic flies in search of food. This study investigates these pollinators on a spatio‐temporal scale and the impact of weather conditions on their availability. Two potential strategies of the plants to cope with pollinator limitation, i.e. autonomous selfing and an increased floral life span, were tested.
  • A total of 6156 flowers were investigated for entrapped pollinators in 10 Croatian populations. Availability of the main pollinator was correlated to meteorological data. Artificial pollination experiments were conducted and the floral life span was recorded in two populations according to pollinator availability.
  • Trachysiphonella ruficeps (Chloropidae) was identified as dominant pollinator, along with less abundant species of Chloropidae, Ceratopogonidae and Milichiidae. Pollinator compositions varied among populations. Weather conditions 15–30 days before pollination had a significant effect on availability of the main pollinator. Flowers were not autonomously selfing, and the floral life span exhibited considerable plasticity depending on pollinator availability.
  • A. rotunda flowers rely on insect pollen vectors. Plants are specialised on a guild of kleptoparasitic flies, rather than on a single species. Pollinator variability may result in differing selection pressures among populations. The availability/abundance of pollinators depends on weather conditions during their larval development. Flowers show a prolonged trapping flower stage that likely increases outcrossing success during periods of pollinator limitation.

The taxonomy of the Mediterranean Aristolochia pallida complex has been under debate since several decades with the following species currently recognized: A. pallida, A. lutea, A. nardiana, A. microstoma, A. merxmuelleri, A. croatica, and A. castellana. These taxa are distributed from Iberia to Turkey. To reconstruct phylogenetic and biogeographic patterns, we employed cpDNA sequence variation using both noncoding (intron and spacer) and protein‐coding regions (i.e., trnK intron, matK gene, and trnKpsbA spacer). Our results show that the morphology‐based traditional taxonomy was not corroborated by our phylogenetic analyses. Aristolochia pallida, A. lutea, A. nardiana, and A. microstoma were not monophyletic. Instead, strong geographic signals were detected. Two major clades, one exclusively occurring in Greece and a second one of pan‐Mediterranean distribution, were found. Several subclades distributed in Greece, NW Turkey, Italy, as well as amphi‐Adriatic subclades, and a subgroup of southern France and Spain, were revealed. The distribution areas of these groups are in close vicinity to hypothesized glacial refugia areas in the Mediterranean. According to molecular clock analyses the diversification of this complex started around 3–3.3 my, before the onset of glaciation cycles, and the further evolution of and within major lineages falls into the Pleistocene. Based on these data, we conclude that the Aristolochia pallida alliance survived in different Mediterranean refugia rarely with low, but often with a high potential for range extension, and a high degree of morphological diversity.  相似文献

Aristolochia bhamoensis from Myanmar is here described and illustrated. This new species is morphologically similar to A. faviogonzalezii (confined to northern Vietnam) and A. cathcartii (growing in the Himalayan region) but is distinguished from the latter two species by having a cream‐white upper part of the perianth tube, with visible purple ridges, a trumpet‐shaped limb, 5.0–5.5 cm diameter, inner surface of limb lobes densely covered with dark‐purple bristles, a nearly circular mouth, 3.2–3.5 cm wide, upper half of throat being dark‐purple to blackish, without striations or dots, and lower half purple, with conspicuous white striation. Morphological characters such as a 3‐lobed gynostemium and a 3‐lobed limb support a placement of the new species in the subgenus Siphisia. A diagnostic key is provided to the seven Siphisia species known from Myanmar.  相似文献

The effect of mutualists (i.e. pollinators) and antagonists (i.e. herbivores) can have non-additive effects on plant fitness. This is often interpreted as evidence for correlated evolution on a suite of traits leading to an increase and decrease of the interaction of plants with mutualists and antagonists, respectively. This situation has been found to prevail in plants that have large floral and fruit displays but are not limited by pollinators for seed set. We suggest the alternative hypothesis, where plants limited by pollinators for seed set (e.g. deceit-pollinated plants) exhibit additive effects of pollinators and herbivores on fitness (i.e. noncorrelated evolution). Using a 2 × 2 factorial design, we tested this hypothesis by solely and simultaneously evaluating the effects of pollinators and the single herbivore, Battus polydamas archidamas , on female reproductive success of Aristolochia chilensis . Plants exposed to herbivores presented 2.6-fold greater herbivory than plants that excluded them. In addition, plants exposed to pollinators showed strong limitation by pollinators for seed set compared with other plants of the genus Aristolochia. However, only pollinators had a significant effect on fruit and seed set because plants that excluded them did not set fruits or seeds. Furthermore, herbivores and pollinators exerted additive effects on fruit and seed production. Collectively, these results indicate that herbivore- and pollinator-linked traits in A. chilensis exhibit noncorrelated evolution.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 91 , 239–245.  相似文献

马兜铃属(广义) (Aristolochia sensu lato)具有花单被、花萼管状、合蕊柱、子房下位、中轴胎座、胚珠多数、蒴果等主要特征, 广布于全世界的热带、亚热带和温带地区, 约有600种, 是马兜铃科中种类最多的属。依据Flora of China, 我国有本属植物45种, 其中33种为中国特有。近些年, 国内大量的新类群被相继报道, 特别是云南、广西两地, 而另一些类群则得到了确认、恢复、重新发表或修订。最近, 基于形态和分子证据, 关木通属(Isotrema)因其花萼管急剧弯曲; 合蕊柱3裂; 雄蕊6, 成对与合蕊柱裂片对生; 蒴果由上而下开裂等区别特征而从广义马兜铃属中被分出独立成属。本文基于大量的野外调查、标本鉴定、数码照片考证和相关文献的仔细研究, 重新梳理了中国马兜铃属和关木通属的种类及分布情况, 确认现阶段中国马兜铃属17种和关木通属58种1亚种, 并一一记述同时编制了最新的检索表。其中, 柔叶关木通(I. mollis)、线叶关木通(I. neolongifolia)的种级地位得到重新确认, 并提供了图版。探讨了优贵马兜铃(A. gentilis)、川滇马兜铃(A. chuandianensis)和纤细马兜铃(A. gracillima)的关系, 昆明关木通(I. kunmingense)与波氏关木通(A. bonatii)的关系, 以及卵叶关木通(I. ovatifolium)、葫芦叶关木通(I. cucurbitoides)、西藏关木通(I. griffithii)、过石珠(I. versicolor)、大别山关木通(I. dabieshanensis)等复合群和袋形关木通(I. saccata)等物种存在的问题。  相似文献

Several lines of evidence suggest that sterile floral organs, collectively known as the perianth, have evolved multiple times during the evolution of the angiosperms. In the family Aristolochiaceae, the perianth is formed by two whorls of organs in the genus Saruma but by only one whorl in the remaining genera, including Aristolochia. Although the morphology of Saruma is similar in appearance to the core eudicot perianth, with leaf-like sepals and showy colored petals, the unipartite perianth of Aristolochia combines morphological aspects of both calyx and corolla. To investigate the organ identity program functioning in the novel perianth of Aristolochia, we identified homologs of the B-class genes APETALA3 (AP3) and PISTILLATA (PI) in both Saruma and Aristolochia. The expression patterns of these genes in Saruma indicate they are functioning in the development of the second whorl petaloid organs and third whorl stamens. In Aristolochia, however, the expression of AP3 and PI homologs in the perianth does not suggest a role in organ identity but, rather, in promoting late aspects of cell differentiation. The implications of these findings for the evolution of both petaloidy and B gene function are discussed.  相似文献

SEM studies of the spathe structures in the two closely related genera Cryptocoryne and Lagenandra show differences between the inner and outer surfaces, as well as in cell structures in the various parts of the spathe. The cell structure reveals patterns mat makes it possible to depict homologous structures of the spathe, even though the spathes of the two genera look different. The basal part of the kettle has a mucilage covering of the cells, interpreted as a hitherto unnoticed food source. The cells of the inner surface of the kettle and tube have downward pointing trichomes. On the second day of flowering these collapse and sink into the cell lumen, which is suggested to create a unique lattice-like structure that enables the insects to climb out of the kettle and tube. The cell structure of the flap shows that it is a prolongation and continuation of the spathe tube margin.  相似文献

We provide a new and valuable marker to study species relationships and population genetics in order to trace evolutionary, ecological, and conservational aspects in the genus Aristolochia. Universal primers for amplification and subsequent sequencing of a chloroplast microsatellite locus inside the trnK intron are presented. Utility of the primers has been tested in 32 species representing all clades of Aristolochia, including population studies within the A. pallida complex, A. clusii and A. rotunda. The microsatellite region is characterized as a (AnTm)k repeat of 22–438 bp containing a combination of different repeats arranged as ‘cryptically simple’.  相似文献

Features of the epidermis such as stomata, hairs, cork and silica cells are described from both light and electron microscope studies. The stomatal complex consists of two guard cells and two subsidiary cells. After division of the guard mother cell a pore is left at each end of the dividing wall. The cork and silica cells arise from a single another cell and develop differentially. The silica cell enlarges more than the cork cell and finally becomes filled with solidified silica. The outer tangential and radial walls of the cork cells become very thick-walled, whereas the inner tangential and radial walls of the silica cells become thickened. The outer tangential wall of the silica cell remains thin and is covered with a thin layer- of cuticle. This wall frequently collapses in old cells leaving a depression in the surface of the stem. The change in the ultrastructure of the cork and silica cells are described and the possible functions of these cells discussed.  相似文献

A widely held hypothesis in evolution is that adaptive specialization constrains the potential direction of future evolutionary change and thus may be irreversible, also known as Dollo's law. However, this hypothesis has long been subject to debate in evolutionary biology. Floral specialization is intriguing as it is usually linked to reproductive isolation and could affect speciation. Here, following the discovery of four new taxa, we observed some interesting phenomena of reversal versus specialization in morphology in a clade with the most specialized flowers in the genus Petrocosmea. In the phylogenetic tree based on sequences of multiple DNA regions, the morphological reversals, especially the regain of a long corolla tube, are nested within the branches characteristic of normally specialized flowers with a short corolla tube and highly specialized zygomorphy. Our results indicate that the highly specialized floral organ of this clade is still actively evolving in multiple branches toward specialization while reversals to different ancestral states occur in some branches. Great disturbance of ecological environment is likely a crucial factor affecting trait reversibility, such as the rapid uplift of the Himalayan–Tibetan plateau. The four new taxa are treated herein taxonomically. The flowers of this clade represent an interesting model to explore the genetic basis underlying the evolutionary reversal versus specialization and the interplay between genetic factors and environmental variables.  相似文献

Love‐in‐a‐mist (Nigella damascena) is an annual species of Ranunculaceae native to the Mediterranean Basin, characterized by delicate flowers lying on long lacy bracts. Two floral morphs of N. damascena, designated [P] and [T], differ in the identity and number of perianth organs and in the position of the perianth–androecium boundary on the meristem. They both occur in the wild. Here we describe a precise comparative schedule of floral development in the two morphs. We divided the sequence of developmental events affecting the floral meristem into six stages and related them to the height of the elongating stem and to the time elapsed after the beginning of stem elongation. In addition, we characterized the expression pattern of C‐class genes in floral organs of both morphs in an attempt to better characterize the differences between the two floral groundplans. In the [T] morph an expansion of the expression domain of AGAMOUS (AG) paralogues outside the fertile organs was observed, correlating with the change in identity of the inner perianth organs. Expression of AG‐like genes in the sepal‐like organs suggests these are not identical to true sepals at the molecular level. The morpho‐temporal framework we have defined will allow us to compare various gene expression profiles at targeted developmental stages in both morphs, providing further insight into the molecular control of the floral dimorphism in N. damascena and into the processes underlying the transition from a differentiated (bipartite) to an undifferentiated (unipartite) perianth. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2015, 178 , 608–619.  相似文献

Koi scale epidermis contains large intra‐epidermal bodies (IEBs). IEBs are dynamic and circular structures that form in low frequency within the epidermis. During formation, an IEB pulls down the microridge‐laden surface layer, which takes on a creased or wrinkled appearance. After the IEB constricts, the microridge layer unfolds to its original state. The newly described IEBs are distinctly different from the recently reported apical rings which are situated on the surface of individual epidermal cells. While apical rings are directly exposed to the external environment where sampling can occur, IEBs appear to reflect intra‐epidermal events such as sequestering of dead cell remnants.  相似文献
