Abstract:The rate of dissolution of calcium oxalate monohydrate and of a calcium oxalate renal stone was measured in 0.9% NaCl solution at different levels of magnesium concentration and pH. The growth of calcium oxalate obtained by chemical reaction between Ca2+ and oxalate ions at a concentration similar to that existing in normal urine was also investigated as a function of pH and magnesium concentration. It was found that both magnesium and pH exert a fine kinetic control on the precipitation and growth of calcium oxalate monohydrate. Magnesium had no effect on the dissolution. The possible role of magnesium and pH in calcium oxalate urolithiasis has been discussed in the light of previous reports and of the data presented in this study.
