Abstract: | Mesophyll chloroplasts were isolated from leaves of a Na+-requiringNAD-malic enzyme type, dicotyledonous C4 plant, Amaranthus tricolorL. The chloroplasts converted pyruvate to phosphoenolpyruvateunder illumination, and the conversion was stimulated by Na+.This observation may explain the requirement for Na+ of someC4 plants.
