Abstract: | Desiccation-induced damage and the capacity to synthesize heat-stableproteins have been examined in two Brassica species. Desiccationdamage to young seedlings, measured as electrolyte leakage andinhibition of overall protein synthesis, is greater in B. napusthan in B.juncea. Constitutive synthesis of heat-stable proteinsis low and declines during desiccation in B. napus while itis relatively high and further increases during desiccationin the case of B.juncea.
