Abstract:The common cutworm, Spodoptera litura, a major pest to a variety of crops, is known to be resistant to many kinds of insecticides, such as organochlorines, organophosphorus, cabamates, pyrethroid and Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) formulations, etc. The factors affecting the formation and development of insecticide resistance include genetic factor, biological factor and operational factor. The biological factor in S.litura is shown by its productivity, polyphagy, migration and activities. Mechanisms of pyrethroid resistance in S. litura was accompanied by enhanced metabolic detoxification of multifunctional oxygenase (MFO). And that of organophosphorus had relation with increased activity of MFO and esterase. Bacteriostatic and inducible bactericidal activities were the factors involved in the resistance of S. litura to Bt. The control strategies of insecticide resistance on S. litura consist of IPM, appropriate application of insecticides, use of natural enemies and nuclear polyhedrosis viruses (NPV).
