| Abstract: | Scent glands are one of important characters to Heteroptera and nearly all true bugs have scent glands. Both adults and immatures can produce large quantities of strong-smelling and irritating defensive chemicals when the bugs are disturbed or molested. In adults, the defensive compounds are produced in large, well-defined, and usually colored metathoracic glands and he nymphal defensive compounds are produced in dorsal abdominal glands. In this paper, the morphology and structure, development, scent substances and biological functions of scent glands are briefly introduced. Special attention has been paid to those in assassin bugs. |
