| Abstract: | A modified plaque inhibition assay for the in tratypic differentia-tion of the wild poliovirus strains has been developed. Sabin type l and Brunhilde guinea-pig antisera at proper dilutions were used to inhibit plaques formed by virus strains isolated from different areas of China. The results indicate that the inhibitory rates showed much difference. With wild strains isolated from Xuzhou and Yunnan,the inhibitory rate can reach 80 percent by using only 160 neutralization units of Sabin 1 antiserum. On the other hand, for the strains isolated from outbreak areas such as Shandong and Guangxi, it needs l 280 units. The protect-ive efficiency against the Beijing wild strains is intermediate ( 320units ) , being similar to the Mahoney strain.This assay has been proved to be a convenient, effective and useful method for intratypic differentiation. Its potential application in biolo-gical investigation and epidemiological surveillance are discussed. |
