Abstract:It has been demonstrated that hemocytes collected from the American oyster, Crassostrea virginica, 2 hr postchallenge with live Bacillus megaterium are significantly less chemotactic to this bacterium. Since chemotaxis between hemocytes and non-self materials is an integral part of the cellular internal defense mechanism in mollusks, this finding may be important in our understanding of reduced cellular reactions in prechallenged animals.
