Enzymatic Activities modified during Multiplication and Differentiation of Neuroblastoma Cells

THE neuroblastoma cell system of Augusti-Tocco and Sato¹ is useful for studying neurone differentiation and function. The cells multiply rapidly in vitro and have low oxygen consumption². When serum is withdrawn from the culture medium, cellular expansion³, increase of acetylcholinesterase activity⁴ and increase of oxygen consumption² occur. The differences in respiratory metabolism of neuroblastoma cells, depending on whether they are proliferating or differentiating, may suggest major modifications of intermediary metabolism.
