Stimulation of the growth and respiration of a methylotrophic bacterium by morphine.
Authors:J Romeo  M Scheraga  and W W Umbreit
Abstract:The growth of a pseudomonad on methanol was stimulated by the presence of morphine (or codeine) in the medium. The drug appeared to influence the amount of growth rather than its rate. Respiration of resting cells on a variety of substrates was stimulated by adding morphine. This report appears to be the first case of a microorganism whose growth and respiration is stimulated by an opiate.
