| Abstract: | Our research shows that the blood amoebocytes of the Chinese horseshoe crabs live 120 minutes in vitro and has 26 or even more kinds of amoeboid movement. Our observations and the supravital staining of the living amoebocytes demonstrate that the cell has two kinds of secretory granules. The bigger ones are haemocyanin, while the smaller ones are the source of amoebocyte lysates. Just before the amoebocyte makes contact with Es-cherichia coli, it is the bacteria which attack the amoebocyte first, when the pseudopodia of amoebocyte get in contact with Escherichia coli, the bacteria become fixed to the pseudo-podia. This is a primitive way of defense by the amoebocytes. |
