Protein-mediated electron transfer

The concept of proteins as ‘conducting glassees’ rather than ‘conducting pathways’ is reviewed in the light of recent experimental evidence on biological electron-transfer rates and their dependence on driving force, reorganization energy, and the distance and coupling between partners. The dependence of midpoint potential and reorganization energy on protein dielectric properties is also reviewed.
