Radiofrequency Therapy for Postherpetic Neuralgia

Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is a severe complication of Herpes zoster with complex pathogenesis, which is a kind of refractory neuropathic pain. PHN is common in the elderly and immunocompromised patients that could seriously affects the daily life of patients. The therapies for PHN includes drug therapy, nerve stimulation therapy, radiofrequency, and nerve block therapy, etc. As a commonly used treatment method of chronic pain, the radiofrequency has been used effectively in the clinical practice. This article will review the mechanism, classify, and the effect of radiofrequency for PHN.
