Abstract: | Sulphasalazine is commonly used to treat patients with ulcerative colitis but the mode of action is still unexplained. To investigate a possible antibacterial effect of sulphasalazine, the faecal flora composition was studied in patients with ulcerative colitis and in mice harbouring a human intestinal flora. Patients on sulphasalazine were found to have an intestinal flora that was completely resistant to sulphapyri-dine. Oral administration of sulphasalazine did not influence the composition of the human flora in mice. |
