Abstract: | The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) plays a vital role in many cellular processes, including Ca2+ storage and release. Calreticulin is a Ca2+-binding chaperon residing in ER. The protein is a key component of the quality control pathways in ER. In the ER lumen, calreticulin performs two major functions, works as a chaperon and regulates Ca2+ homeostasis. In cardiac muscle, calreticulin plays an important role in cardiac development and pathology. |
