Abstract: | Fluridone, an inhibitor of ABA biosynthesis, restored the seedgermination of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. cv. Grand Rapids)and many other plant species at supra-optimal temperatures.ABA content in lettuce seeds after imbibition quickly decreasedat 23°C, but not at 33°C (a supraoptimal temperature).Fluridone caused a decrease in ABA content at 33°C, whichsuggests that the maintenance of high ABA content could be responsiblefor high-temperature inhibition of germination of lettuce seeds. This probably results from an increase in the rate of ABA biosynthesisat the higher temperature. The present study indicates thatABA plays a decisive role in the regulation of seed germinationat supraoptimal temperatures. 1 Corresponding author: fax 81-22-717-8834; e-mail yoshi@bios.tohoku.ac.jp |
