Abstract:In order to explore the mechanism for changes of auditory spatial response properties of inferior collicular(IC) neurons after monaural plugging, we studied effects of monaural plugging on the GABA-immunopositive neurons in the central nucleus of inferior colliculus(ICc) of bat, Myotis chinensis using immunohistochemical technique. The results show that the number of GABA-immunopositive neurons in the ICc contralateral to the plugged ear decreased markedly(P<0.05) but there were no changes in the sizes and shapes of GABA-immunopositive neurons. These data suggest that postnatal early monaural plugging can cause the decrease of GABAergic inhibition in the ICc. Because the auditory spatial response properties of neuron relate to center-surround inhibition, the decrease of inhibition can cause the changes of auditory spatial response properties. Thus,we believe that the changes of auditory spatial response properties of IC neurons may be caused mainly by the decrease of GABAergic inhibition after monaural plugging.
