Inhibition of Butyrate Oxidation by Formate during Methanogenesis

A mixed methanogenic culture fed with glucose was perturbed with butyrate and formate to investigate the role of formate in the acetogenesis of butyrate. A free energy analysis suggests that formate rather than H₂ was the interspecies electron carrier for butyrate conversion into acetate for the culture studied.
