The essence,obligations and expectations of biomedical engineering

As an authentic branch of the engineering profession, the essence of biomedical engineering was to stress upon the practical application aspect rather than creating another new field of scientific pursue on its own. The motivation of establishing such specialty was to utilize the unique training, special skills and techno- logical know-how of the engineering profession to help medicine for the purpose of improving the quality and effectiveness of health care. Such collaborative effort has produced landmark achievements. The biomedical engineering profession has the burden and obligation to assure the proper use of biotechnology for reliable, effective and economically affordable health care in low and moderate-income countries including China. This presentation provides a sobering discussion on the realistic goals and obligations of this discipline in the light of unforeseen and forthcoming constraints and obstacles.
