Abstract:Neurones from five patients with Alzheimer's disease were studied semi-quantitatively on Golgi impregnated samples of cerebral cortex. They showed a dramatic reduction in dendritic spine number of pyramidal and non-pyramidal cells of all neocortical layers, as compared with control samples matched for age. Dendritic spine loss could be an initial phenomenon in Alzheimer's disease pathology.
