An Approximation to the Bayes Optimal Multi-Stage Design in the Colton Model for Clinical Trials

A simple and operationally convenient approximation is proposed for the Bayes optimal multistage design within the Colton decision-theoretic model for the comparison of two medical treatments. The two- and three-stage designs are developed in full; the latter is found to be superior to several existing designs including some involving sequential adaptive sampling.
