Abstract: | Presumed haploid and diploid cultures ofCryptococcus albidus were analysed for their DNA content per cell. A ratio of approximately 1:2 was obtained by relating the DNA content per cell of the two phases to ploidy. As the diplophase formed neither longitudinally septated cells nor ballistoconidia, the earlier suggestions thatCryptococcus is closely related toTremella seems less likely. On the assumption that the metabasidia ofCryptococcus are gastromycetoid, a closer relationship between this genus and the tulasnelloid fungi appears more probable.Microbiology Research Group, South African Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Pretoria, South Africa. |
