A STUDY ON THE KARYOTYPE OF IRIS ENSATA

The present paper deals with the karyotype analysis of Iris ensata Thunb. (Iridaceae) for the first time, and the chromosomes in growing tip cell of root have been found to be 2n=40, with median and submedian constrictions. Measurements in microns of the chromosomes are given in Table 1. Photomicrographys of the chromosome complements and idiogram of the karyotype are shown in fig 1 & 2 respectively. According to the terminology defined by Levan et al.(?) the karyotype formula is K(2n)=40=26m+4m(SAT)+10sm, belong to "2A" type of Stebbins' karyotypic symmetry 7], and should therefore be generally considered as a rather primitive one.
