Abstract: | The morphology of the sperm of Isometra vivipara is markedly different from the spherical-headed sperm typical of crinoids in general. The sperm head of Isometra has a flattened, oval shape. In addition to a nucleus, the head includes a lateral acrosome on one flat surface and a lateral mitochondrion on the opposite flat surface. From the latter surface of the sperm head, a tail flagellum arises adjacent to the mitochondrion. The discussion considers the relationships between reproductive habits and sperm morphology in Isometra and other crinoids. |
