Metabolic Similarity of Palaemon Populations from Different Brackish Waters (Short Note)

The oxygen consumption rates (standard metabolic level) of three Palaemon adspersus populations from Fjords in the Belt Sea (Baltic) with different salinity regimes and of Palaemon elegans from the Black Sea measured under summer temperature conditions in a flow-through respirometer are almost identical. A possible interpretation of these findings from the evolutionary standpoint and its practical importance for research into brackish water environments is briefly discussed.
