Abstract: | A statistical model for mutation and selection is formulated for organisms that reproduce by division. The mutation rate that optimizes the probability of clone survival is approximated using the theory of branching processes. However, it is shown by example that this optimizing mutation rate need not be the most advantageous mutation rate. The principle that selection favors those modifying features that optimize the probability of clone survival is thereby shown to be of limited applicability. |
