Abstract: | Using flow cytometry, strains of Dunaliella salina that produce large amounts of beta-carotene were sorted from mixed populations. When grown in large outdoor bioreactors, one carotene-producing strain thrived and was phenotypically stable throughout the three year trial. The use of this high-yield strain in industrial-scale processes doubled beta-carotene productivity. Flow cytometry provided a rapid and precise method to identify and isolate algal strains of potential commercial value. |
