Ongoing DNA synthesis continues in young human diploid cells (HDC) fused to senescent HDC, but entry into S phase is inhibited

Previous experiments have shown that when young human diploid cells (HDC) were fused to senescent HDC, neither nucleus synthesized DNA. This paper demonstrates that when young HDC are in S phase at the time of fusion to senescent HDC, they do make DNA in heterodikaryons; therefore, ongoing DNA synthesis is not inhibited by senescent cells. On the other hand, entry into S phase is inhibited: young HDC nuclei in G1 phase do not make DNA in heterodikaryons with senescent HDC.
