Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are hazardous pollutants. Photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) was used to degrade individual PAHs dissolved in aqueous solution and results were compared to those used for ozonation treatment of PAHs in aqueous phase and adsorbed on soil reported previously. Both PCO and ozonation showed high effectiveness and efficiency in degrading PAHs within only minutes of time. Ozonation showed higher performance in the degradation of PAHs in aqueous solution than in soil, whereas the treatment efficiency of PCO was higher than that of ozonation in degrading PAHs in aqueous solution. Both methods have advantages over each other but they have their own limitation(s) in practical application.
Keywords:polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons  photocatalytic oxidation  ozonation.
