The Expression of Nerve Growth Factor Receptor on Schwann Cells and the Effect of These Cells on Regeneration of Axons in Traumatically Injured Human Spinal Cord

In order to investigate the regeneration of axons and the effects of Schwann cell and NGFR onregenerating , 21 autopsy materials of spinal cord from patients with survival from 2 hours to 54 yearsafter spinal cord trauma were studied by using the methods of immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy. The resuls were as follows ; the regenerating sprouts of axon could be observed as early as4 days after trauma. 4. 5 months after trauma, many regenerating nests of axons appeared in the injured spinal cord. The regeneration nest contained the directionally arranged axons and Schwann cellsby which some axons were myllinated. The Schwann cells expressed the NGFR. The Schwann cellswithin spinal roots in injured level expressed increased positive NGFR. These results showed that theactively regenerating process happened in traumaticalh injured human spinal cord. The NGFR expresssed on Schwann cells could mediated NGFR to support and induce the axon regeneration inCNS.
