Abstract: | Hydration of an isolated rat tail tendon fiber was found to cause its torsion. A similar effect was observed upon changing the specimen temperature in the 12–38°C range. The direction and the angle of rotation of the distal end of the fiber did not depend on its length (12–80 mm). Rather, they depended on the prevalence of clockwise-or counterclockwise-driving collagen units, the distribution of which in the tendon fiber was apparently probabilistic. The phenomenon of collagen bundle rotation is considered in the context of the mechanism of mechanoreceptor stimulation by temperature shifts. |
