A TAXONOMIC STUDY ON CHINESE POLYGRAPHUS ERICHSON WITH DESCRIPTIONS OF THREE NEW SPECIES AND A NEW SUBSPECIES (COLEOPTERA:SCOLYTIDAE)

Abstract:This paper is a studying report on Chinese Polygraphus Erichson. Firstly, the authors describe 3 species new to science: P. pterocaryi, P. amplifolius and P. querci. Secondly,they have changed the division of subspecies in species Polygraphus rudis Eggers, 1933.They have found that P. rudis likiangensis Tsai et Yin, 1965 P. rudis retiventriculus Tsai et Yin, 1965, P. zhungdianensis Tsai et Yin, 1965 and P. squanzeus Yin et Huang, 1981 are all synonyms of P. rudis Eggers, because as the collected specimens have been increased,durinig a period of quite a few years, to a number of more than 2000, the differences of diagnosis characters and the differences of the geographical distributions of each species and subspecies are becoming obscure and overlapping. However, they discovered that P. radis Eggers is still existing in two subspecies froms:P. rudis rudis Eggers and P. rudis hexiensis ssp. nov. The diagnosis characters of the two subspecies, which they have discovered on the basis of studying thousands of specimens, are the thickness of body vestitutre and the average body length. The boundary line of geographical distributions of the two subspecies is the northern boundary of Hengduanshan Mountains. Thirdly, the authors present a key of the genus Polygraphus, which includes all the 15 species and subspecies in China.
