Abstract: | Filamentous cyanobacteria, the only prokaryotes that form linear patterns of differentiated cells, can be genetically manipulated by the conjugative transfer of plasmids from Escherichia coli. It has become possible to determine the cellular localization of genetic transcription, including transcription of developmentally critical genes before morphological differentiation takes place, by using luciferase as a reporter. These techniques are facilitating developmental analysis. |
