Abstract: | The growth of 2 well characterized bacteriophage phi X174 mutants, phi XGam3 and phi XGms3 (TCG)Ser, was examined on 3 suppressor strains of Escherichia coli: CQ3 Su1, which inserts serine at amber codons; HF4714, a well known amber suppressor that has been used as the permissive strain for a number of phi X mutants; and CQ2 Su3, which inserts tyrosine. The data demonstrate HF4714 inserts glutamine and is Su2, not Su1 as has been reported in several recent papers. |
