| Abstract: | Bacterial biomass in marine sediments may be estimated from the amount of muramic acid present. A method for determining muramic acid by high performance liquid chromatography is described, which is simpler and faster than other methods. Muramic acid is released from sediment by acid hydrolysis, and assayed as an o-phthaldialdehyde derivative. |
