ON STRUCTURE AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE MALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM OF THE CHINSES PRAWN PENAEUS ORIENTALIS

The structure of the male genital system of the Chinese prawn Penaeus orientalis Kishinouye described in his paper is different from that previously described by the other authors. This system includes a pair of testes, wasa deferentia, secretory channels and seminal vesicles. The testis which was ignored by previous authors consists of nine finger-shaped lobes on each. side. The anterior vasa deferentia extend out from the basal parts of the lobes and coalesce in one, which, opens into the median vas defe-rens. The secretory channel and the median vas deferens are enclosed by the same outer wall, and separated by an epithelial-connective tissue septum. Most of the epithelia lining the genital channels in the system possess secretory function. The brush-like structure appears on the border of the epithelial cells lining the seminal vesicle when the male matures. It is suggested that the structure may be the secretory products of the cells.Spermatogenesis of the prawn in the Bohai Sea occurs from August through October. Sperms generating in one developmental cycle are enough for filling several pairs of capsules of spermatophores, so that the mate prawn could mate more than once.
