Abstract: | We examined the NO3 and NH4+ uptake capabilities of thedinoflagellate Peridinium cinctum and of the accompanying nanoplanktonduring the spring P. cinctum bloom in Lake Kin-neret. Throughoutthe Peridinium season, the smaller algae had greater affinitiesand faster specific uptake rates for both NO3and NH4+It appears that P. cinctum cannot directly compete with nanoplanktonfor nitrogen nutrients. Other factors such as the ability ofdinoflagellates to swim freely in the water column and low grazingpressures may explain their dominance in the lake. |
