| Abstract: | The direction of DNA chain growth in thymine-depleted bacteria was determined by comparing the rate of release of radioactive label by Escherichia coli exonuclease I from pulse-labeled DNA chains to that of uniformly labeled DNA of the same size. Radioactive label was found to be distributed throughout the length of the pulse-labeled DNA, indicating that longer chains arise through the joining of many extremely small polynucleotide chains. |
