Abstract: | The lymphocytes of rat spleen are birefringent after staining with neutral red. The negative birefringence of the DNA increases remarkably after in vitro incubation with phytohemagglutinin (PHA). The effect of PHA on lymphocytes is demonstrable even in the early stage of stimulation. This early stage is named ‘chromatin activation reaction’. Demonstration of the chromatin activation reaction by means of polarization optical analysis can be applied to the investigation of the lymphocyte transformation reaction. |
