Effect of hydrophobic side chains on the pressure-induced changes in the NMR spectra of water-soluble biopolymers

Abstract:Measurements have been made of the high-resolution nmr spectra of the polyamino acids polyN5-(2-hydroxyethyl)-L -glutamine] and polyN5-(4-hydroxybutyl)-L -glutamine] in mixed deuterium oxide and water solvent at varying pressures from 1.03 to 3163.7 kg/cm2. The results are compared with previously reported results for the polymer polyN5-(3-hydroxypropyl)-L -glutamine] under similar conditions. The significance of the behaviour of the polymers is considered in terms of the effect of the presence of hydrophobic residues in their side chains.
