Protoplasts isolated from cultured cells of Coptis japonicaand Euphorbia millii were electrically fused using platinummicroelectrodes. The process involved two stages, cellular andvacuolar fusion, which are characterized respectively by transientwrinkling of the membrane and the formation of a dark-red precipitate.
