Abstract: | Data are presented to show that Trypanosoma melophagium is not pathogenic to the sheep ked, Melophagus ovinus. During each normal cycle of the ked population on sheep, death of variable numbers of keds occurs that cannot be attributed to host resistance. Pathological signs include abdominal swelling, reddening of the hemolymph, cessation of peristalsis, and desquamation of the epithelium of the posterior midgut. These pathological developments are attributed to hypoxia in the gut wall resulting from occlusion of abdominal spiracles with debris. They occur alike in keds infected with T. melophagium and in keds that have been made flagellate free experimentally. |
