| Abstract: | Precopulatory mate guarding is reported for the first time from a freshwater harpacticoid, Harpacticella inopinata. Adult males were observed grasping onto juvenile females from the third copepodid stage onwards, but most commonly with the fifth copepodid. This behaviour is interpreted as a plesiomorphic trait of the family Harpacticidae. |
