Abstract: | The earliest-known fossil mysticete (baleen) whales, Mauicetus spp. (Cetacea: Mysticeti), occur in mid-Oligocene sediments in New Zealand. Evidence assembled here indicates that the evolution of the mysticetes was probably induced by plankton productivity changes associated with the initiation of the Circum-Antarctic Current in mid-Oligocene times. The New Zealand region was a focal point for this evolution. |
