Abstract: | An understanding of the physiological factors important to growth and agar production of the Gelidiales would be useful for successful mariculture of these commercially valuable plants. Several environmental factors, including light, nitrogen, carbon, temperature and water motion, have been shown to have potential significance for growth rates, reproduction and carbon partitioning in defining optimal conditions for cultivation. Limiting and optimal growth conditions, where known, are presented, and evaluation of data reported in the literature is addressed. |
